Rippling: How Social Entrepreneurs Spread Innovation Throughout the World by Beverly Schwartz, VP of Global Marketing at Ashoka, has won a 2013 Silver Nautilus Book Award in the Social Change category. Deemed one of today’s most innovative books for solving social and environmental challenges, Rippling clearly articulates that significant, life-altering progress is possible when empathy, creativity, passion, and persistence are combined with changemakers everywhere. The book is already available in Japanese and Korean, published by Eiji Press.

The Nautilus Award (www.nautilusbookawards.com) is an honor given to distinguished literary contributions to spiritual growth, conscious living, and positive social change. Schwartz will be joining past Nautilus Book Award winners Deepak Chopra, Desmond Tutu , Jeremy Rifkin, Eckhart Tolle, and His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

“No one should be surprised that Bev Schwartz’s Rippling was honored by the 2013 Nautilus Book Awards.  She gives the reader a true, deep understanding of a hugely diverse cast of top social entrepreneurs -- and she also draws out bigger, cross-cutting patterns such as how almost all social entrepreneurs, unlike their business peers, create movements,” says Bill Drayton, CEO of Ashoka: Innovators for the Public. By drawing on a wealth of insights offered by some of the world’s leading social entrepreneurs, Schwartz provides a colorfully illustrated blueprint for visionary thinking, and demonstrates how everyday people can drive meaningful change.

In the book, the author cites five time-tested principles that define successful models of changemaking for both organizations and individual leaders, including 1) restructuring industry norms, 2) changing market dynamics, 3) using market forces to create social value, 4) advancing full citizenship, and 5) cultivating empathy. She demonstrates how these principles work with moving accounts about social entrepreneurs who are applying them and literally re-structuring the world, creating a powerful, positive effect.  Each section includes reflections from thought leaders such as Arianna Huffington, Geeta Rao Gupta, Esther Dyson and Peter M. Senge.

Schwartz says that she “wrote the book with the intent to inspire people everywhere to appreciate their power and become involved in solving social challenges, no matter where they live, who they are, or what they do.” She is thrilled to win a Nautilus Award and feels “this award will help spread the message and influence how people choose to live their lives”.
