Sustainability thought-leader Rona Fried, Ph.D., Discusses NASDAQ OMX Green Economy Global Index with CSRwire CEO, Joe Sibilia

In one of the grandest shifts in the sustainability movement, NASDAQ OMX Group launched a new family of indexes, the NASDAQ OMX Green Economy Global Index (Nasdaq:QGREEN) - making it easier for investors to track companies propelling the green economy.

Last week, Joe Siblia, CSRwire CEO, interviewed Rona Fried, Ph.D., CEO of SustainableBusiness.com, LLC, which jointly developed the Index family with NASDAQ OMX.

When asked why the Index was created, Dr. Fried states the need for a comprehensive clearinghouse for sustainable business and green investing information was clear. For the past 16 years, the number of people interested in green jobs and green investing, once a small market, has grown exponentially - and the Index is able to provide them with all the "green" business information in one place.

"The changes have been enormous," Dr. Fried says. "The three industries that have grown the most are green building, sustainable agriculture and, of course, renewable energy and energy efficiency."

Fried explains to Sibilia that her experience on the board of the WilderHill New Energy Global Innovation Index led her to help in constructing the NASDAQ OMX Green Economy Global Index. The WilderHill Index served as a bellwether for compiling the list of companies Fried included in the new Green Index.

The NASDAQ OMX Green Economy Global Index covers 13 sectors, including:

  • Advanced materials
  • Bio/clean fuels
  • Energy efficiency
  • Financial
  • Green building
  • Healthy living
  • Lighting
  • Natural resources
  • Pollution mitigation
  • Recycling
  • Renewable energy generation
  • Transport
  • Water

The final list includes approximately 350 companies out of the 480 Fried researched - the majority of those companies that did not make the final cut either had a market cap that was too small or stock that wasn't liquid enough.

"The Index is a well-calculated, all-inclusive list of 'green' publicly-traded companies worldwide," Fried adds.

Toward the end of the interview - after the discussion detailing the criteria for how and why a company is selected - Sibilia asks, "Who is your favorite sustainability professional?" Fried simply chuckles and states, ""¦other than Joe Sibilia, that person would be Amory Lovins."
