Deloitte Carries on IMPACT Day Tradition; Contributes Business Counsel to Hundreds of Nonprofits Still Feeling Effects of the Recession

Deloitte National Day of Service Demonstrates the Value of Workplace Volunteerism, Commitment to Education

While the economy shows signs of improvement, countless nonprofits continue to strain under the weight of the recession fall-out. Today, in what has become an IMPACT Day tradition, Deloitte is providing hundreds of nonprofit leaders from across the country with valuable counsel to help them deal with common business challenges, at no cost. This day of service marks Deloitte's 11th Annual IMPACT Day, a celebration that symbolizes its year-round culture of service. Tens of thousands of Deloitte personnel are volunteering at 800+ projects nationwide, giving their time to nonprofits.

Additionally, Deloitte is celebrating IMPACT Day by prominently showcasing its deep commitment to education. Volunteers, in conjunction with education-based nonprofits including College Summit, City Year and Junior Achievement, among others, are working directly with students at an array of events designed to support academic success and college readiness. They are leading workshops on a variety of session topics including career coaching, mentoring and navigating the college admissions process.

"We firmly believe that workplace volunteer programs can drive real results for our communities when businesses match the talent and skills of the workforces with the needs of nonprofits. Deloitte takes a unique approach to its annual day of service. While IMPACT Day does include conventional volunteer activities such as painting, planting and beautification projects, nearly a third of Deloitte's volunteer projects are skills-based in nature.

Specific examples of how Deloitte personnel are contributing their skills include:

  • Deloitte's Greater Washington, D.C. practice is hosting a Deloitte Center for Leadership and Community for some 50 leaders from among the area's largest community-based nonprofits who, collectively, oversee operating budgets in excess of $300 million and manage about 7,500 employees. The forum is the final installment in a four-part invitation-only series for nonprofit CEOs designed to address the unique challenges and attributes of leadership in today's environment. This session, titled "Building Your Bench," focuses on leadership development and includes a keynote address by Barry Salzberg, CEO, Deloitte LLP on Leadership During Challenging Times.

  • Deloitte's Detroit practice is also hosting a Deloitte Center for Leadership and Community, focused on helping nonprofits contend with the extremely challenging socio/economic conditions that are threatening their survival. The session, the first in a three-part series, serves as a forum for Deloitte volunteers to facilitate discussion amongst nonprofit executives about issues including corruption, decreasing population and reduced physical footprint, the business climate, health factors and public safety. Attendees will map their programs against the City's top priorities to identify opportunities for alignment.

  • Deloitte's Chicago practice is using the occasion of IMPACT Day to host a session for influential thought leaders from Chicago Public Schools, nonprofits and corporations, who will gather to discuss the intersection between volunteerism and education. Attendees will explore how volunteerism can make a positive impact on Chicago Public Schools and students.
