Deloitte Releases Inaugural Corporate Responsibility Report

NEW YORK,NY. - October 2, 2008 - Following its first full year under a board-approved corporate responsibility policy, Deloitte today released its inaugural corporate responsibility report for the period between August 2007 and July 2008. The report is available online in an interactive format at www.deloitte.com/us/crhome.

"The umbrella of corporate responsibility covers mature and newer programs, and we have backed our increased commitment with the right structure and resources," said Barry Salzberg, chief executive officer, Deloitte LLP. "By following responsible business practices, investing in our current and future talent, respecting the environment and improving local communities, we know that society and the economy will benefit "“ and so will we."

Highlights of Deloitte's corporate responsibility commitment during the past year include:

  • Deloitte's board of directors approved management's appointment of Tom Dekar as corporate responsibility officer.

  • Deloitte announced an investment of $50 million in pro bono engagements to provide in-kind professional services to eligible non-profit organizations.

  • On June 6, 2008, 32,500 Deloitte employees contributed their time and business skills to local nonprofits for the organization's ninth annual IMPACT Day.

  • In a speech to the nation's foremost community service leaders gathered at the White House to celebrate National Volunteer Week, President George W. Bush recognized Deloitte for its leadership and commitment to skills-based volunteering and awarded the President's Volunteer Service Award to Barry Salzberg.

  • Deloitte announced that it will invest approximately $300 million in its people through the creation of a state-of-the-art, LEED-certified, learning and leadership development center. The firm also rolled out Mass Career Customization(TM), allowing employees to build customized careers that align with their passions, interests and work/life balance needs.

  • Deloitte was named to several prestigious lists, including the top spot on BusinessWeek's "Best Places to Launch a Career"; BusinessWeek's "50 Best Internships"; Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For"; Training magazine's "Training Top 125"; Working Mother magazine's "Best Companies for Multicultural Women"; and DiversityInc's "Top 50 Companies for Diversity."

  • Deloitte launched its office greening program aimed at the reduction of daily energy use, paper and product consumption, waste reduction and recycling and awareness building. More than 24,500 Deloitte professionals have participated in the "How green is your footprint?(TM)" survey to determine their impact on the environment and steps for improving.

  • Deloitte implemented a Green IT program to reduce waste and energy use and established protocols for embedding corporate responsibility and sustainability considerations into its procurement processes.

  • Deloitte's Enterprise Sustainability group helped clients improve their environmental and social performance, advising them on the elements of a Wholly Sustainable Enterprise "“ a company that generates growth, profitability and value by applying principles of sustainability across its entire base of activity.
As an important priority of the corporate responsibility initiative going forward, Deloitte is in the process of calculating its carbon baseline and setting reduction targets.
