NEW YORK, NY - November 16, 2007 - Sharon L. Allen, Chairman of the Board, Deloitte & Touche USA LLP, has been named Chairman of the Board of the American Friends of the Phelophepa Train (AFPT).

"It's an honor, on behalf of Deloitte, to support the critical work of the AFPT Board, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Ms. Leah Tutu in bringing awareness to the healthcare needs of the people of South Africa to the United States," said Allen.

Allen, named Chairman of the Board of Deloitte in 2003 and re-elected Chairman in 2007, serves on the President's Export Council and is a member of the Women's Leadership Board of the JFK School of Government at Harvard University. Named one of Forbes' Magazines "Most Powerful Women in the World" for the past two years, she also serves on the national board of the YMCA, the Autry National Center of Los Angeles and the United Way of Greater Los Angeles.

Allen replaces James E. Copeland, Jr., former CEO of Deloitte and Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, who has served as the Chairman of the AFPT organization for the past four years.

Founded in 1994, the Phelophepa (pronounced PAY-low-PEP-PA) Train is a mobile medical unit that annually travels through 36 South African rural areas five days a week providing medical, dental and eye care, health education, psychological counseling and training programs on HIV/AIDS to disadvantaged people in these areas. In rural provinces of South Africa, there is one doctor for every 5,000 people.

The Phelophepa represents social healing and reconciliation for what was a racially torn nation. Partly funded by the Transnet Foundation of South Africa, the program has been so successful that the South African Government will be launching a second train, Phelophepa II, in 2008.

For the past six years the American Friends of the Phelophepa Train have presented a gala dinner to celebrate and support the Train's travels throughout South Africa. US-based global business and social leaders, who share the goals and have made significant contributions, are recognized, not only for support of the cause but also for their efforts to improve the economic conditions in South Africa and the lives of its people.
