Blackbaud’s 2023 Impact Report Shows How the Company Is Fueling Change

The Environmental Protection Agency has announced <a aria-label="the final rule for Phase 3 - open in a new tab" href="https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2024-04-22/pdf/2024-06809.pdf" rel="noopener" target="_blank">the final rule for Phase 3</a> of its Greenhouse Gas Emissions for heavy-duty vehicles. Since issuing Phase 1 of its GHG regulations in 2011, EPA emissions rules for all vehicle classes have become increasingly rigorous. The latest Phase 3 rule continues to address heavy-duty vehicles which the EPA separates into five categories: light heavy-duty vocational; medium heavy-duty vocational; heavy heavy-duty vocational; short-haul (day cab) tractors; and long-haul (sleeper cab) tractors.

In its introduction for GHG Phase 3, EPA pointed out that its latest phase sets new carbon dioxide (CO2) emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles through model year 2032 “with more stringent CO2 standards phasing in as early as MY 2027 for certain vehicle categories.” Prior to finalizing GHG standards, EPA considers comments from various stakeholders like manufacturers, fleets, owner-operators, trucking associations, environmental interest groups and private citizens. The standards are technology-neutral and performance-based, allowing each manufacturer to choose what set of emissions control technologies is best suited to meet the standards and the needs of their customers.

“We have assessed and demonstrated that these standards are appropriate and feasible considering cost, lead time, and other relevant factors,” EPA noted in its executive summary.

<ul><li>The initial rollout for Phase 3 GHG impacts only MY 2027 light heavy-duty and medium heavy-duty on-highway vocational vehicles such as commercial chassis cabs, panel vans and box trucks (complete pickups not included) ranging from Class 2b to 3, or 8,500 to 14,000 lb. gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). Though EPA does not endorse any particular technology and does not mandate the use of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs), they do project a possible path of compliance for MY 2027 light heavy-duty vocational with 17% ZEVs and 83% powered by internal combustion engines (ICE). MY 2027 medium heavy-duty vocational could be a mix of 13% zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) and 87% ICE.</li>
	<li>Lower Phase 3 standards come next for MY 2028 short-haul (day cab) tractors which the EPA anticipates will be a combination of 8% ZEV and 92% ICE. MY 2029 heavy heavy-duty vehicles follow with a projected mix of 13% ZEV and 87% ICE. MY 2030 long-haul (sleeper cab) bring up the rear with an anticipated adoption rate of 6% ZEV and 94% ICE. Check the EPA’s table below for other projected rates of adoption for subsequent model years through 2032.</li>
	<li>EPA set its GHG Phase 3 timeline based on current and projected advances to prevent and control GHG emissions. The EPA makes clear that it does not pick and choose when it comes to emissions reduction. The agency recognizes that fleets and owner-operators will continue to adopt emerging technologies. Options such as all-electric, fuel cell and internal combustion will continue to play a vital role. A range of technologies can meet the demanding heavy-duty power requirements while continuing to reduce emissions along the way. For example, the Biden administration recently acknowledged the importance of emissions reduction through support of <a href="https://www.cummins.com/news/2024/03/15/multi-million-dollar-award-signals-strong-support-cummins-hydrogen-engines?utm_source=advocacy&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=corp-all-advocacy" target="_blank">research and development of hydrogen internal combustion engines</a>, including Cummins’ X15H. EPA states in GHG Phase 3 that hydrogen engines have essentially a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions.</li>
	<li>The EPA also announced that it is adding warranty requirements for batteries and other components of zero-emission vehicles and requiring customer-facing battery state-of-health monitors for plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles.</li>
	<li>EPA notes it has improved its analysis of infrastructure readiness for heavy-duty all-electric, hydrogen fuel cell and hydrogen combustion trucks. Citing growing public and private funding sources, the agency states, “there are significant efforts already underway to develop and expand heavy-duty vehicle electric charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure.”</li>
</ul>Through Cummins’ multi-solutions approach, the company can offer customers the industry’s broadest portfolio of low- and zero-emissions, allowing customers to meet emissions regulations in a way that also best meets their business needs.

Action on the climate crisis remains a high priority. Vancity issued its second climate report including updating the progress made on both Vancity’s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions across its loans and mortgages by 2040 and its Net Zero Bankers Alliance (NZBA) commitments. The climate report also includes disclosures on managing climate risks and opportunities, including through public policy advocacy, guided by the ISSB’s new IFRS S2 Climate-related Disclosures Standard, and detailed greenhouse gas emissions data and methodology. Vancity’s progress toward the 2025 interim targets for financed GHG emissions and “percentage change since 2019” from residential mortgages and commercial real estate are externally assured.

Vancity added a Sustainability Issuance Report to its reporting suite after publishing its first Sustainability Issuance Framework to guide issuances of green, social, and sustainable financing instruments. Vancity issued -- the first of its kind by a Canadian community credit union -- $200 million in bearer deposit notes (BDNs). The BDN proceeds were used to finance sustainability initiatives.

Urban League of Greater Hartford Is Awarded $150,000 Grant From KeyBank Foundation

CSAA Insurance Group, a AAA insurer, today released its <a href="https://csaa-insurance.aaa.com/impact" target="_blank">2023 Impact Report</a>, assessing its collective progress toward its goals for planet, people and practice and highlighting its accomplishments in these areas.

“We recognize that addressing one audience or one area in isolation may not lead to our desired outcomes,” said Mike Zukerman, CSAA’s interim president and chief executive officer. “That’s why we’ve started to employ a broader lens – total social impact – when looking at our imprint on our planet, our people, and the communities we serve as we progress on our journey in these spaces.”

Key highlights from the 2023 Impact Report include the following:

50% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions

The company’s goal of a 50% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 was achieved in 2023 – two years ahead of plan. (Note: Inclusive of Scopes 1, 2 and 3, inclusive of business travel, employee commute, work-from-home energy, and paper emissions, vs. 2016 baseline.)

Improved CDP score

For the second year, CSAA voluntarily submitted its climate journey, including its emission inventories, to the CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), a not-for-profit charity that runs a global disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states and regions to manage their environmental impacts. CSAA scored a B for 2023, a significant improvement from its 2022 score of a C. This milestone will help the company propel its work forward and better understand its strengths and opportunities.

$25M investment in California Wildfire Innovation Fund

CSAA committed to investing $25M in the California Wildfire Innovation Fund. The company partnered with Blue Forest Asset Management, a conservation finance non-profit focused on forest restoration, to create the fund with the goal of helping protect the environment, its customers and communities. Part of the investment has been allocated to impactful projects that are helping to reduce wildfire risk while providing job opportunities in rural communities.

Go Green Benefit program

In 2023, CSAA developed the Go Green Benefit program for launch in 2024. This decarbonization strategy offers employees financial incentives to purchase green electricity for home offices, supports employees with solar energy and encourages climate-friendly commuting for in-office employees.

Milestone in representation of women

In 2023, CSAA accomplished an important milestone – representation of women at the supervisor, manager and executive levels (combined) achieved parity with the U.S. labor force. The only level below parity is the executive group, at 46%.

Climate Resiliency Challenge

In 2023, CSAA – along with design firm IDEO and professional services firm Aon, among others – launched the global Climate Resiliency Challenge. The Challenge sought solutions to help frontline communities prevent, prepare for and recover from climate-related disasters, such as wildfires, floods and extreme weather. The 2023 Impact Report features six case studies celebrating some of the Challenge winners and how their big ideas have leaned into innovation to support their communities.

“We engage in partnerships to enable this work because we know that partnering for change makes change far more likely to occur,” said Zukerman. “We believe that our impact strategy facilitates an empowered workforce and trust in our company, all of which are integral to the sustainable growth and profitability of our organization.”

CSAA Insurance Group Releases Impact Report Detailing Its Significant Initiatives and Contributions in 2023

This spring, 40 U.S. Bank volunteers participated at the annual Women’s Build with <a class="external-linked" href="https://habitatgreatersac.org/get-involved/womenbuild/" target="_blank">Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento</a>.

“It is all about helping to break the cycle of poverty,” said Ann Marie Westrum, a U.S. Bank private wealth mortgage loan officer who is also on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento.

“Landlords can take advantage of tenants with rent hikes or poor living conditions, but creating an affordable and decent place to live helps families improve their immediate quality of life and build equity for generational wealth,” she said.

Through her volunteerism, Westrum said, she has also learned several new construction skills that have helped her renovate her own home and investment properties.

“I highly recommend women come volunteer with their local Habitat affiliates because it expands your mind, and your heart,” she said. “When you’re working side by side with the family that the house is actually being built for, and you hear their moving story, you can’t help but feel grateful to be there. The mission of Habitat for Humanity is to put love into action, and that is exactly what happens when you volunteer.”

From 2020 to 2023, U.S. Bank provided more than $6.7 million in corporate contributions and U.S. Bank Foundation giving nationally to Habitat, and matched employee giving at more than $84,000.

Helping organizations work to create safe and affordable housing is a cornerstone of the U.S. Bank <a href="https://www.usbank.com/about-us-bank/community/community-possible-grant-program.html" target="_blank">Community Possible</a> giving and engagement strategy.

“U.S. Bank supports efforts that connect individuals and families with sustainable housing opportunities,” said Ashley Abenoja-Bocek, a U.S. Bank community affairs manager who participated in the build. “As a volunteer, it is special to be a part of this work in a hands-on way with my bank colleagues who care about creating a vibrant community in Central California as much as I do.”

On May 2, U.S. Bank also will support the <a class="external-linked" href="https://www.bigdayofgiving.org/organization/Habitatsac" target="_blank">“Big Day of Giving” for Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento</a>. U.S. Bank will match 100% of donations up to $50,000 for Big Day of Giving. Support from Big Day of Giving will go toward critically needed operating funding.

In a continued effort to drive career and leadership training for the next generation, FedEx recently hosted a group of FedEx-HBCU student ambassadors in Los Angeles for a career immersion experience.

From witnessing a special delivery of horses by FedEx plane to participating in a boardroom style meeting with FedEx leadership to gain career advice, student ambassadors experienced empowerment, engagement, and education, which are three main components of the FedEx program. Student ambassadors also toured FedEx operations at the Los Angeles International Airport, and received an opportunity of a lifetime attending the 55th annual NAACP Image Awards, an organization and event FedEx sponsors.

“I believe this trip may have opened more doors for me than I could have anticipated. I will forever be grateful for this opportunity,” said Keith Jordan, Lane College (Jackson, TN).

As we close out a sunny week in southern California, the energy is electric.

The 2024 WELL Conference featured a rich array of sessions, from envisioning the next frontier of healthy buildings to amplifying the importance of diversity in shaping healthier spaces. Roundtables provided the opportunity to zero-in on industry trends, from sustainable finance to measuring health impact. And a unique-project type panel profiled SFO’s Harvey Milk Terminal B, the Petinelli Curitiba, a hospital that provides cost-free care to 80% of patients, as well as a manufacturing facility–all of which earned WELL Certification.

"What an incredible journey it’s been! Over the past three days, the WELL community harnessed the immense power of people-to-people, face-to-face connection while engaging in remarkable content," said Kimberly Lewis Inkumsah, Executive Vice President of Equity, Engagement, and Events at IWBI. Public Health Icons Take Center Stage 
Dr. Richard Carmona, 17th Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Michelle Williams of Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Kenneth Mendez of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, and Dr. Esther Sternberg, author of Well at Work, brought awe and inspiration as icons of public health, demonstrating evidence to action. The panel was punctuated with the unveiling and signing of <a href="https://resources.wellcertified.com/press-releases/iwbi-launches-the-international-healthy-building-accord-with-support-from-public-health-luminaries-dozens-of-well-aps-and-other-healthy-building-champions/" target="_blank">IWBI’s International Healthy Building Accord</a>—a global call to action outlining the imperative for healthy buildings, key focus areas and strategic policy actions necessary to accelerate healthy buildings worldwide.

“In the role of Surgeon General, we would issue a call to action when the nation’s health, well-being or safety was at risk. This is a similar situation and precisely why we are uniting under the banner of the International Healthy Building Accord, a global call to action urging the world’s leaders to take key policy actions to accelerate change,” said Dr. Richard Carmona, the 17th Surgeon General of the United States. “And considering we spend 90% of our lives indoors, it is imperative that our buildings protect, support and enhance our health, such as providing clean air to breathe and clean water to drink.”

At another MainStage session, pioneering leaders of the healthy building movement explored just how “smart” buildings can be and how that intelligence can be aimed at supporting healthy, more resilient and more sustainable buildings. From discussing the trajectory to net zero and fostering climate resilience to exploring transformative solutions at the intersection of health and decarbonization, the spotlight on the future of high-performance buildings was shining bright. Our own Rachel Hodgdon led the lively conversation with Eran Chen of ODA, Emily Watkins of the Instant Group, George R. Oliver of Johnson Controls International and Rick Fedrizzi, IWBI Executive Chairman.

Oliver, CEO and Chairman of Johnson Controls, shared the need for buildings to become more strategic: they have been historically viewed as part of the balance sheet, the time is now to change that.

Chen, Founder of ODA, spoke about his approach to design, including how he strives to integrate the indoors and outdoors to improve health outcomes.

There was talk of healthy workplaces–once considered a nice-to-have, healthy workplaces have become a must-have in real estate, especially in coworking and flexible workspaces. And evidence-based health interventions help support workplace satisfaction, comfort and productivity, while also helping organizations better attract and retain talent. Which is why IWBI and The Instant Group, the largest global marketplace for flexible workspace, of which Watkins serves as Chief Client Officer, recently formed a <a href="https://resources.wellcertified.com/press-releases/iwbi-and-the-instant-group-announce-strategic-partnership-to-spur-health-leadership-in-coworking-and-flexible-workspaces/" target="_blank">strategic partnership</a> to spur health and well-being practices in coworking and flexible workspaces.

The partnership will encompass a range of joint efforts aimed at elevating health, including opportunities to advance innovative solutions to better support people-first spaces.

We were on the edge of our seats as Cheryl Durst of IIDA, Maya Bird-Murphy, of Mobile Makers, Gabrielle Bullock of Perkins&amp;Will and Yiselle Santos Rivera of HKS shared emerging trends in creating spaces that promote both physical well-being and inclusivity. The critical role design plays in fostering belonging, justice, equity and inclusion was the focal point.

The all-women panel shared their personal definitions of human health and wellness, citing psychological safety and a sense of belonging to the ethos of architects, historically rooted in health, safety and welfare. An environment that provided the ability to thrive was a must for all.

Gabrielle Bullock reminded us that true equity in design transcends the conventional. It’s about crafting environments that authentically reflect the diverse identities of those who inhabit them. “Equity isn’t just a wellness room and gender-neutral bathrooms,” she emphasized. “It’s about designing spaces that resonate with everyone’s unique identity in the workplace.”

And from the upcoming “clash of generations,” to intergenerational living, there was palpable excitement about changing challenges into opportunities through transformative design centered around people and shared values.

As Durst put it: “Design is about what is on the receiving end. At the receiving end of design is human beings.”

And during the Design for Inclusion and Belonging roundtable, Durst also spoke to the need to design for the “the longevity revolution,” per the UN, how by 2050, the number of people reaching age 100 is increasing to 4 million. This is compounded by the fact that age is also psychological, and sedentary lifestyles invite such effects as back pain at younger and younger ages, when we’re expected to live longer and longer.

"Equity is fundamental to the work that we are doing no matter who we are. It is fundamental to justice, well-being and building a sense of trust for the shared future,” said Stephen Huddart, Adjunct Professor, University of Victoria.

What shapes who we are and can become? Thanks to Cindy Blackstock of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society, Dr. Courtney Howard of the Global Climate and Health Alliance and Stephen Huddart of the University of Victoria, we further know that embracing equity leads to meaningful and lasting impact, fostering a more inclusive and just society for all. The panel explored the deep vulnerabilities of the youngest generations in indigenous Canadian cultures, including the stark inequities they have faced, and how the work of courageous advocates who came together to beat the odds to create lasting change. Feeling connected to land, to structures, is a critical piece in supporting equitable solutions, and ensuring that land contributes to well-being.

As Dr. Howard shared, “Buildings are a gift to the next generation, if we do them well.”

In the Yellowknife region of Canada, there was a near 3-month bout of wildfire smoke, the worst on earth. Clean air shelters were one opportunity to enhance equity in the community–but the standards set for clean air shelters were set at a different time.

Eight visionaries who represent all walks of life–from the wellness space and real estate to tech experts, Olympians and business owners–brought the house down with stories of courage, innovation and heart, all centered on health and well-being. In PechaKucha-style, each storyteller told their tale using: 20 slides with 20 seconds per slide, for a 7-minute story.

The stories featured pioneers, investors, parents, innovators, Olympians, Olympian parents–specifically the first-ever mom to win a gold medal in swimming. Our storytellers got real, discussing health challenges, work challenges and life challenges. There was a connection throughout each story, as the critical link of health and well-being won the day–something relatable and inspiring for everyone in the audience.

It was a privilege to have the Honorable Brendan Owens, Chief Sustainability Officer for the Department of Defense, on the MainStage. Responsible for more than 500,000 military buildings across the world — from housing to aircraft hangars, from the Pentagon to training campuses — Mr. Owens highlighted scores of agency priorities, as well as the role of buildings in keeping U.S. armed forces at the top of their game.

Owens also shared that the Department of Defense is a part of the WELL for residential pilot, which will provide technical credibility to underpin decisions the agency is making to form policy for its properties.

The project was recently featured on the front page of the Miami Herald. Caplow Manzano was one of the 25 pilot participants of the WELL for residential program, a new roadmap in the WELL ecosystem for architects, designers, builders, developers and operators to create healthier, more resilient homes.

The WELL Conference, a recharge moment for the mission, left an indelible mark on attendees near and far, sparking ideas and initiatives that will continue to propel the healthy building movement forward–because we all benefit when we come together to advance people-first places.
