FORT WORTH, Texas, May 15, 2024 /CSRwire/ - American Airlines proudly announces a historic endeavor to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, France. On May 31, American will fly 70 World War II veterans to France on a donated charter flight to honor them for their service and sacrifice.

D-Day marks a pivotal moment in history, and this trip reaffirms American’s commitment to supporting veterans and preserving their stories 80 years later.

Among the many heroes who will return to Normandy with American is U.S. Navy veteran Felix Maurizio, who was on a landing craft that deployed troops onto Omaha Beach on D-Day. One of the soldiers he dropped off was his brother, Sal, who served in an Army medical unit.

After being discharged from service, he pursued his dream of a career in aviation with nearly 40 years of service at Piedmont Airlines. Piedmont is one of the many heritage airlines that came together to form today’s American Airlines.

The journey will begin with a kickoff dinner at the American Airlines headquarters in Fort Worth the night before, followed by a send-off parade at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport before the group boards a chartered flight to Paris.

The veterans will spend two days in Paris before traveling to the Normandy region for commemorative events. The trip will include visits to key historical sites, concerts and special ceremonies to honor the courage and sacrifice of all who served during World War II. The trip will culminate with a June 6 ceremony at the Normandy American Cemetery, where more than 9,000 U.S. service members have been laid to rest.

American Airlines Honors Veterans With Special Journey to Normandy for the 80th Anniversary of D-Day

Blackbaud’s 2023 Impact Report Shows How the Company Is Fueling Change

The Environmental Protection Agency has announced <a aria-label="the final rule for Phase 3 - open in a new tab" href="https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2024-04-22/pdf/2024-06809.pdf" rel="noopener" target="_blank">the final rule for Phase 3</a> of its Greenhouse Gas Emissions for heavy-duty vehicles. Since issuing Phase 1 of its GHG regulations in 2011, EPA emissions rules for all vehicle classes have become increasingly rigorous. The latest Phase 3 rule continues to address heavy-duty vehicles which the EPA separates into five categories: light heavy-duty vocational; medium heavy-duty vocational; heavy heavy-duty vocational; short-haul (day cab) tractors; and long-haul (sleeper cab) tractors.

In its introduction for GHG Phase 3, EPA pointed out that its latest phase sets new carbon dioxide (CO2) emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles through model year 2032 “with more stringent CO2 standards phasing in as early as MY 2027 for certain vehicle categories.” Prior to finalizing GHG standards, EPA considers comments from various stakeholders like manufacturers, fleets, owner-operators, trucking associations, environmental interest groups and private citizens. The standards are technology-neutral and performance-based, allowing each manufacturer to choose what set of emissions control technologies is best suited to meet the standards and the needs of their customers.

“We have assessed and demonstrated that these standards are appropriate and feasible considering cost, lead time, and other relevant factors,” EPA noted in its executive summary.

<ul><li>The initial rollout for Phase 3 GHG impacts only MY 2027 light heavy-duty and medium heavy-duty on-highway vocational vehicles such as commercial chassis cabs, panel vans and box trucks (complete pickups not included) ranging from Class 2b to 3, or 8,500 to 14,000 lb. gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). Though EPA does not endorse any particular technology and does not mandate the use of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs), they do project a possible path of compliance for MY 2027 light heavy-duty vocational with 17% ZEVs and 83% powered by internal combustion engines (ICE). MY 2027 medium heavy-duty vocational could be a mix of 13% zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) and 87% ICE.</li>
	<li>Lower Phase 3 standards come next for MY 2028 short-haul (day cab) tractors which the EPA anticipates will be a combination of 8% ZEV and 92% ICE. MY 2029 heavy heavy-duty vehicles follow with a projected mix of 13% ZEV and 87% ICE. MY 2030 long-haul (sleeper cab) bring up the rear with an anticipated adoption rate of 6% ZEV and 94% ICE. Check the EPA’s table below for other projected rates of adoption for subsequent model years through 2032.</li>
	<li>EPA set its GHG Phase 3 timeline based on current and projected advances to prevent and control GHG emissions. The EPA makes clear that it does not pick and choose when it comes to emissions reduction. The agency recognizes that fleets and owner-operators will continue to adopt emerging technologies. Options such as all-electric, fuel cell and internal combustion will continue to play a vital role. A range of technologies can meet the demanding heavy-duty power requirements while continuing to reduce emissions along the way. For example, the Biden administration recently acknowledged the importance of emissions reduction through support of <a href="https://www.cummins.com/news/2024/03/15/multi-million-dollar-award-signals-strong-support-cummins-hydrogen-engines?utm_source=advocacy&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=corp-all-advocacy" target="_blank">research and development of hydrogen internal combustion engines</a>, including Cummins’ X15H. EPA states in GHG Phase 3 that hydrogen engines have essentially a 100% reduction in CO2 emissions.</li>
	<li>The EPA also announced that it is adding warranty requirements for batteries and other components of zero-emission vehicles and requiring customer-facing battery state-of-health monitors for plug-in hybrid and battery electric vehicles.</li>
	<li>EPA notes it has improved its analysis of infrastructure readiness for heavy-duty all-electric, hydrogen fuel cell and hydrogen combustion trucks. Citing growing public and private funding sources, the agency states, “there are significant efforts already underway to develop and expand heavy-duty vehicle electric charging and hydrogen refueling infrastructure.”</li>
</ul>Through Cummins’ multi-solutions approach, the company can offer customers the industry’s broadest portfolio of low- and zero-emissions, allowing customers to meet emissions regulations in a way that also best meets their business needs.

Action on the climate crisis remains a high priority. Vancity issued its second climate report including updating the progress made on both Vancity’s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions across its loans and mortgages by 2040 and its Net Zero Bankers Alliance (NZBA) commitments. The climate report also includes disclosures on managing climate risks and opportunities, including through public policy advocacy, guided by the ISSB’s new IFRS S2 Climate-related Disclosures Standard, and detailed greenhouse gas emissions data and methodology. The addition of the STEAM and Financial Capability modules will provide the Scholars, ranging in age from 14 to 19, with age-appropriate financial literacy in earnings, living expenses, budgeting, maintaining bank accounts, investing, and acquiring assets, as well as workforce readiness and entrepreneurship. Through workshops, simulations, speakers, tours, games, and activities, participants will be exposed to basic financial management techniques, and receive insights to help put them on a path to building wealth and reducing the wealth gap. Thanks to KeyBank, the Urban League of Greater Hartford expects to have an impact on current students, and attract new students, with these new modules, which also include financial incentives that afford participants an opportunity to actually put the things they learn into practice. In 2022, the Greater Hartford Project Ready team served nearly 70 students, 100 percent of whom were promoted to the next grade, with all of its seniors enrolling in college.

Urban League of Greater Hartford Is Awarded $150,000 Grant From KeyBank Foundation

The KFC Foundation is awarding $250,000 in grants to 25 community-based non-profit organization projects focused on education and training. Kentucky Fried Wishes, one of the KFC Foundation’s community giving programs, invites non-profit organizations to apply for a grant to fund a project on their wish list. This year, the KFC Foundation will fund $1 million in Kentucky Fried Wishes to 100 non-profits nationwide, with 25 grants awarded quarterly based on different project categories.

This cycle’s grant recipients span over 20 different states and support a variety of causes and communities, including:

The Kentucky Fried Wishes grant will allow the organization to purchase 67 laptops to support 7 new schools, reaching over 400 students.</li>
	<li><a href="https://www.grackentucky.org/" target="_blank">Gateway Regional Arts Center</a>, located in Mt. Sterling, KY, promotes, enhances, and contributes to the educational, artistic, and cultural lives of those living in Central and Eastern Kentucky. The Kentucky Fried Wishes grant will go towards the organization’s Pottery for Change program, which provides six months of art therapy-based pottery classes for justice-involved foster youth at the Gateway Children’s Services facility in Mt. Sterling, KY.</li>
	<li><a href="https://tibhospice.org/" target="_blank">The INN Between</a>, located in Salt Lake City, UT, provides medical respite and end-of-life care to those experiencing homelessness. ESG and sustainability data are increasingly used by investors, regulators, customers, employees, and other stakeholders to assess the sustainability and value of a company. This expanded use has prompted audit and assurance practices, as they help de-risk sustainability data by enhancing data credibility and reducing the risks of errors, omissions, and misstatements.

International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) research showed <a href="https://ifacweb.blob.core.windows.net/publicfiles/2024-02/IFAC-State-Play-Sustainability-Disclosure-Assurance-2019-2022_0.pdf" target="_blank">69% of companies</a> globally obtained assurance on some of their sustainability disclosures in 2022 and were expanding the scope of their assurance engagements year over year. Moreover, according to 2024 Nasdaq ESG Solutions research, 97% of companies report that audit and assurance of ESG and sustainability data is a challenge [1].

Because inaugural assurance engagements can be overwhelming, Nasdaq ESG Solutions outlines best practices to help sustainability leaders secure the right resources and engage the right people in pursuit of investor-grade sustainability and ESG data. We additionally highlight key examples of assurance expectations in regulatory and voluntary reporting.

Terminology Sustainability Leaders Should Know

Before digging into how audit and assurance are currently leveraged for sustainability data, it is helpful to take a step back to define key terms. Audit and verification are the processes of examining and verifying the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of data and information and assurance is the deliverable or outcome of the audit. There are different levels of assurance, and companies often begin with a lighter touch and work their way up to more in-depth verification.

<ul><li>Attestation is a review of a sub-component of a disclosure, where a third party will attest to the processes and controls to which the company handles a set of data.</li>
	<li>Limited assurance primarily includes analytical procedures and inquiries. This is typically based on a limited data request.</li>
	<li>Reasonable assurance is more expansive, going beyond data requests to include site visits and more testing. Note that the transition from limited to reasonable assurance can be a significant lift for companies.</li>
</ul>The literal outcome of this work is a written statement, which is often attached to the sustainability report. The statement will cite the values and protocols to which the data has been verified. In addition, the company will receive a report indicating errors and other learnings from the audit. This is an important tool for companies to continue improving their ESG and sustainability data management.

Where Assurance Fits into Sustainability Reporting

There are many examples of assurance requirements or recommendations in both regulatory and voluntary reporting. A few are outlined below and others can be found across many frameworks and standards supported in <a href="https://www.nasdaq.com/solutions/corporate-esg-solutions/metrio?utm_campaign=CPE-24-05-02&amp;utm_medium=Advertising&amp;utm_source=3BLMedia" target="_blank">Nasdaq Metrio™</a>, Nasdaq’s sustainability reporting and data management solution.

Regulatory requirements around the globe prescribe levels of assurance for climate and other ESG data. While these regulations do not apply to every company, examples include:

<ul><li><a href="https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/what-companies-should-know-about-sec-climate-disclosure-rule?utm_campaign=CPE-24-05-02&amp;utm_medium=Advertising&amp;utm_source=3BLMedia" target="_blank">U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Climate-Related Disclosure Rules</a>. The <a href="https://www.sec.gov/files/rules/final/2024/33-11275.pdf" target="_blank">SEC rules</a>, adopted March 6, 2024, require large accelerated filers (over $700M float) and accelerated filers (between $75M and $700M float) to disclose Scope 1 (direct) and 2 (indirect) emissions if they are material and obtain a third-party attestation of any disclosed Scope 1 and 2 emissions. It further provides a phase-in period for large accelerated filers to achieve reasonable assurance and accelerated filers to achieve limited assurance. Even if your company does not need to disclose Scope 1 and 2, all companies will need to provide certain climate-related disclosures in their audited financial statements. The company’s CEO and CFO will need to certify the accuracy of all information and effectiveness of controls and procedures, so a company may want to obtain assurance to help ensure data accuracy.</li>
	<li><a href="https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/what-companies-should-know-about-californias-new-climate-accountability-package?utm_campaign=CPE-24-05-02&amp;utm_medium=Advertising&amp;utm_source=3BLMedia" target="_blank">California’s Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act (SB-253)</a>. <a href="https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB253" target="_blank">SB-253</a> requires public and private companies doing business in California with over $1 billion in total annual revenues to disclose Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions and obtain assurance over those emissions. For Scopes 1 and 2, limited assurance will be required beginning in 2026, then reasonable assurance beginning in 2030. For Scope 3, limited assurance will be required beginning in 2030. The California Air Resources Board must provide more specific requirements around disclosure and assurance by January 1, 2025.</li>
	<li><a href="https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/csrd-eu-climate-regulations-what-companies-need-to-know-about-the-revised-european?utm_campaign=CPE-24-05-02&amp;utm_medium=Advertising&amp;utm_source=3BLMedia" target="_blank">EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD)</a>. The <a href="https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX:32022L2464" target="_blank">EU CSRD</a> takes a progressive approach to enhancing the level of assurance required for sustainability information, beginning with limited assurance and expanding to reasonable assurance. The European Commission will adopt assurance standards for limited assurance no later than October 1, 2026 by means of delegated acts. For reasonable assurance, there will be standards in delegated acts by October 1, 2028, following an assessment to determine if reasonable assurance is feasible for auditors and undertakings. Considering the results of that assessment and, if appropriate, those delegated acts will also specify the date from which a requirement for reasonable assurance shall apply.</li>
</ul>Voluntary ESG and sustainability reporting frameworks also address assurance. For example, the <a href="https://assets.bbhub.io/company/sites/60/2021/10/FINAL-2017-TCFD-Report.pdf" target="_blank">Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures</a> (TCFD) states that “disclosures should be subject to internal governance processes that are the same or substantially similar to those used for financial reporting.” Some entities that score or rank companies’ sustainability disclosures reward or allocate points for assurance practices, such as:

<ul><li>The <a href="https://guidance.cdp.net/en/guidance?cid=C10.1&amp;ctype=ExternalRef&amp;gettags=1&amp;idtype=RecordExternalRef&amp;incchild=1&amp;microsite=1&amp;otype=ORS&amp;page=1" target="_blank">Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP)</a> supports verification and assurance as good practice in environmental reporting because it offers data users further confidence in the accuracy of the data reported. It asks respondents to indicate the type of verification or assurance (from limited to high assurance), assurance cycle, and completion status for the current reporting year.</li>
	<li>The <a href="https://portal.s1.spglobal.com/survey/documents/CSA_Handbook.pdf" target="_blank">S&amp;P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA)</a> for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) asks if the company has received any external assurance in relation to its sustainability reporting. If so, it requests evidence indicating where the assurance statement is available in the public domain.</li>
</ul>Building the Right Team

Audit and assurance of ESG and sustainability data involve internal and external parties. If ESG and sustainability responsibilities sit within the finance function, the company may already have created these cross-team connections given familiarity with existing financial auditing practices. For ESG and sustainability leaders assembling their teams for the first time, consider including the following:

<ul><li>The corporate controller is responsible for the company’s accounting, reporting, and financial management, including the preparation and presentation of ESG and sustainability data.</li>
	<li>Data owners contribute data ranging from environmental inputs to workforce statistics and corporate policies. These individuals are typically the first line of defense in generating good data, given they own the program or project related to the data.</li>
	<li>Data approvers sign off on information provided by data owners ahead of assurance and public release of the data.</li>
	<li>The legal, compliance, and risk team is typically the second line of defense, helping ensure that data owners and approvers are following the defined processes and policies set forth by the company.</li>
	<li>The internal audit team is viewed as the third line of defense, providing independent and objective review of the effectiveness and efficiency of the company’s governance, risk management, and control processes, including those related to ESG and sustainability data. Internal audit departments typically report directly to the board or audit committee.</li>
	<li>The external auditor or assurance provider is an independent professional firm that provides assurance and attestation services on the fairness and reliability of the company’s financial and non-financial information, including the ESG and sustainability data.</li>
</ul>Audit Trail and Traceability

In addition to proactively assembling a cross-functional team, the following practices may help companies prepare for assurance:

<ul><li>Define clear roles and responsibilities. Identify data owners and establish sign off requirements by subject matter experts. Leverage workflow management tools, such as those in <a href="https://www.nasdaq.com/solutions/corporate-esg-solutions/metrio?utm_campaign=CPE-24-05-02&amp;utm_medium=Advertising&amp;utm_source=3BLMedia" target="_blank">Nasdaq Metrio</a> to assign team members to the appropriate roles and define or limit access to the data to avoid unintentional corruption of information. Defined roles are particularly important, as the individuals providing the data are often different from those providing the final quality assurance.</li>

	<li>Request source documentation. When requesting data, ask for supporting documentation such as a copy of the output from a technology solution or the link to a publicly available policy. Attaching supporting documents to data entries helps avoid tracking down sources in the future.</li>
