Report Highlights

Commonwealth Bank of Australia this week issued its Corporate Responsibility Report 2016, which provides an overview of the long-term value created for its stakeholders during the 2016 financial year.

“Our Corporate Responsibility Strategy is a key part of how we deliver against our vision to excel at securing and enhancing the financial wellbeing of people, businesses and communities,” said Kylie Macfarlane, General Manager, Corporate Responsibility. “Our annual Corporate Responsibility Report is the way we communicate the progress we’ve made over the last year and our plans for the future.”

Independently assured metrics are available in the report which has 3 main sections: Our role in society, Our people and The way we do business. 2016 highlights from each of these include:

  • Our role in society: As part of the Bank’s recently announced $50 million investment in education: exceeded target to double the annual enrolment in our free Start Smart financial literacy program with more than 557,000 students enrolled and launched Evidence for Learning, a new social enterprise set up by Social Ventures Australia, incubated with $6 million of Bank funding, inclusive of a new Learning Impact Fund that evaluates education programs in Australia to raise the academic achievement of children and young adults.

  • Our people: Strengthened our commitment to gender diversity by setting a new 40 per cent target for women in Executive Manager and above positions by 2020, having reached our previous target of 35 per cent in July 2015. Granted $2 million to 229 grassroots programs through the Staff Community Fund, Australia’s longest-running workplace-giving program.

  • The way we do business: announced new and updated environmental, social and governance policies and practices including a revised Group Environment Policy, enhanced financed carbon emissions disclosures, a new Human Rights Position Statement, a new Wealth Management Responsible Investing Framework and updates on the way we embed our approach to responsible lending across our operations.
