Setting new sights with our clean energy. As a recognized leader in hydropower and large transmission systems, Hydro-Québec exports clean, renewable power and commercializes its unique expertise and innovations on world markets. Hydro-Québec’s sustainability vision goes well beyond the environment. The company endeavors to contribute to the province’s economic vitality and to encourage stakeholders to participate in its decisions.

2015 highlights:

• 99% – Hydro-Québec’s energy portfolio comprises mainly renewable energies: 99% hydropower generated by the company, as well as wind, solar and biomass energy purchased from independent producers.
• 7.4 million – Thanks to Hydro-Québec’s exports, 7.4 million metric tons of GHG emissions were avoided. That’s the equivalent of the emissions related to its operations over the past 15 years. The company’s GHG emissions have been reduced by 88% since 1990.
• 500,000 households – Energy and capacity needs are increasing, but through energy efficiency measures on customer premises and in the company’s facilities, they have been reduced by a third. The remaining needs are met through clean and renewable energy sources. Cumulative energy savings since 2003 amount to 8.8TWh—the consumption equivalent of 500,000 Québec households.
• 100+ projects – Through its projects and activities, Hydro-Québec is present across Québec and endeavors to maintain good relations with communities. The company limits any inconveniences associated with its operations, strives to reach a consensus with the community at each step in a project and showcases the heritage of the regions in which it operates. Over 100 projects were subject to Hydro-Québec’s public participation process in 2015.
• $130 million in R&D – Innovation is the core of Hydro-Québec’s activities. Fifty years ago, it inaugurated the world’s first 735-kV transmission line. Today, it is at the forefront of transportation electrification in Québec and a world leader in energy storage and conversion. Hydro-Québec invested $130 million in R&D in 2015.
• A $6.2-billion contribution to the Québec economy – Hydro-Québec’s contribution to the Québec economy is outstanding: billions of dollars invested as well as thousands of jobs created and maintained. Last year, $2.4 billion was paid to its shareholder, the Québec government, in the form of a dividend, and 93% of its goods and services were purchased in Québec.
