Report Highlights

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has just published its second Sustainable Development Report, which is available at www.stm.info/English/en-bref/a-rdd2009.pdf. The report describes the company’s principal sustainable development activities and accomplishments for 2009.

Every time the STM’s customers opt for public transit, they help avoid greenhouse gas emissions. That is why the 4% overall increase in service recorded in 2009 is a key component of sustainable development.

Among the 2009 highlights presented in the report:

3,011 jobs were sustained by the STM’s acquisitions of goods and services; 39% more than in 2006.
3,083 tonnes of residual materials were recovered, up 57% since 2006.
An inventory of 27 contaminated and potentially contaminated properties was completed.
Greenhouse gas emissions rose by 7%, due to the growth in bus service.
A group of project engineers and managers were trained in methods of factoring sustainable development into project planning and design.
The work-related accident frequency decreased 18%.
The STM received a number of awards related to sustainable development from outside organizations: four went to employees, and nine to the company.

Also in 2009, the STM developed a process of consulting internal and external stakeholders on the question of sustainable development.

The full report is available exclusively in electronic format. Only a six-page summary of highlights has been printed. A table supplementing the report presents over 70 sustainable development indicators that attest to the quality and seriousness of the STM’s approach in this regard.
