Hydro-Québec has published its Sustainability Report 2009. It is available on the company’s Web site at www.hydroquebec.com/publications/en/enviro_performance/index.html.

Key 2009 achievements highlighted in the report:

Energy efficiency objectives were raised for a sixth consecutive year - with ;946 GWh in new savings - to a total of 4.3 TWh, bringing the company closer to its 2015 target of 11 TWh in total annual savings.
98% of the electricity generated by Hydro-Québec was from renewable sources.
Net power sales outside Québec replaced thermal output, preventing 9 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Construction began on the $6.5 billion Romaine hydropower complex, which is considered the largest infrastructure project in Canada.
89% of goods and services were purchased in Québec, injecting $2.5 billion into the province’s economy.

For its Sustainability Report 2009, Hydro-Québec produced a self-declaration corresponding to Application Level B of the Global Reporting Initiative’s G3 guidelines. The declaration has been checked by the GRI. Some of the data has also been audited by an external firm.

Hydro-Québec is one of the leading electric utilities in North America and ranks among the world’s largest hydropower producers. It uses mainly renewable generating options, specifically hydropower and wind power.
