Titled 'A Natural Progression', the report summarises the business's progress over 2008-09 and includes an update on its commitments to dealing fairly with suppliers, selling responsibly sourced quality products, making a positive difference to the communities in which it does business and reducing its impact on the environment. The report sets out the company’s refreshed CSR governance structure and provides insight into the challenges it is facing.

Highlights include:

a commitment to work to deliver absolute reductions in CO2e emissions,
new targets to halve the impact of refrigeration and cooling direct CO2e emissions by 2012 and divert 95% of waste from landfill by 2013,
19% and 17% improvements for Waitrose and John Lewis, respectively, against a target to deliver a 20% improvement in energy efficiency by 2010,
7% reduction in transport related CO2e emissions per £million sales since 2005/06,
99% of building waste recycled during the construction of the new John Lewis Cardiff store,
working with overseas growers to extend the LEAF Marque standard globally,
new targets for introducing FSC-certified timber into John Lewis’s indoor furniture ranges,
1 million children learning to grow fruit and vegetables through Waitrose’s support of the RHS Campaign for School Gardening,
community contributions of over £7.5 million, equivalent to 1.85% of pre-tax profits.
