PepsiCo UK & Ireland (PIUK), the company behind brands such as Tropicana, Walkers and Quaker, has published an update on its public environmental sustainability commitments.

Areas of environmental performance highlighted include:
12 public pledges are on track or have already been delivered, 9 have seen partial progress, and only two have seen limited or no progress
11.8% reduction in energy use in 2008, building on a 6% reduction in 2007
0.1% reduction in absolute carbon footprint, despite business growth of almost 10%
16% of electricity now sourced from renewables during 2008, double the level in 2007
39% reduction in waste to landfill during 2008, following 23% reduction in 2007
2% reduction in the packaging of Walkers Crisps

The Report also looked at progress against PIUK's longer-term commitments. The company is currently exploring the potential to install on-site renewable sources of energy at all manufacturing and distribution sites, to start to develop technology to capture water embedded in potatoes and to move towards zero water intake at its Walkers factories. PIUK is also working to embed sustainability across its supply chain, last year hosting a series of supplier sustainability summits, and encouraging suppliers to take part in the Carbon Disclosure Project’s supply chain initiative. It has also commissioned a sustainable potato project to identify practical on-farm metrics and action to reduce its growers’ carbon footprint and water impacts.

PIUK employs over 5,500 people across 13 locations. Its core brands are Walkers, Quaker, Tropicana and Pepsi - but the business also includes a wide range of other products, including Copella, Planet Lunch, Doritos, Snack a Jacks and SunBites.
