Delhaize Group (DG) has published its second Corporate Responsibility Report (2008) outlining CR performance and commitment to specific targets.

The Group has integrated the CR activities of its operating companies, resulting in a Group strategy, with clear measurements and appropriate tools, enabling target-setting.

CR strategy focuses on three main themes (products, people & planet) and five focus areas (see below)

Highlights include: main achievements; stance and performance across five focus areas; commitment to specific targets and objectives from 2009 to 2020 and beyond.

Taking examples across five focus areas:

Food Safety:
Over 95% of stores externally audited for food safety and 87% of store associates received food safety training over past 3 years. Objective: Measure 100% of private brands suppliers for food safety compliance by end 2010.

Health & Wellness:
Hannaford and Food Lion voted two of 10 healthiest grocery chains in U.S. and 38% of food sales derived from fresh products. 2009 target: Communicate health and wellness, particularly in areas of affordability and disease control.

Associate Development:
Associate engagement survey conducted across 5 000 associates Group-wide – offering insight to how associates engage with their company.
63% of associates received performance reviews in 2008. 2009 objective: Ensure all associates have annual, documented personal performance review.

Energy Conservation:
Carbon footprint measured, so DG can address main carbon emissions across the entire Group. Objective: Use this information to plan & set goals for each operating company.

Responsible Sourcing:
Seafood buying practices monitored at Hannaford, Food Lion & Delhaize Belgium. 2009 objective: Continue work with NGOs to develop sustainable seafood strategy.
