Report Highlights

Johnson Matthey, the international speciality chemicals company, has published its 2008/09 Sustainability Report online at www.matthey.com/Sustainability2009/index.html.

The report reviews the company’s progress towards its ‘Sustainability 2017’ Vision and the work it is doing to reduce its own footprint, waste and use of resources. Among its diverse business activities, Johnson Matthey produces environmental technologies, many of which enhance quality of life or help others to reduce their impacts.

Eighteen months ago Johnson Matthey launched its Sustainability 2017 programme. Under this, Johnson Matthey’s businesses are defining their own plans within a wider corporate roadmap to meet the Sustainability 2017 aspirations. There has been a strong emphasis on getting employees to buy into the programme - company-wide communication has been strengthened and training given.

The response to Sustainability 2017 has been powerful as local teams are putting effort and imagination into realising sustainability - in the workplace, in the community and at home. A series of case studies document environmental, social / community and health and safety initiatives, together with examples that show how environmentally beneficial technologies are being developed. Outstanding achievements were recognised in the company’s newly established Sustainability 2017 Awards which showcase results to date and indicate what sustainability is all about on the ground.

The programme is underpinned by a clear strategic framework with key targets (carbon neutrality, earnings per share, waste, resources and health and safety). The business side of the programme is important and sustainability is a key element of the strategy for future growth. KPIs have been created against a base year of 2006/07.

Johnson Matthey is a world leader in environmental technologies with a significant proportion of profits generated by products that directly benefit the environment. It celebrates its 200th anniversary in 2017 and aims to enter its third century as a more sustainable and competitive business.
