The publication highlights the challenges presented by the global financial crisis and its impact on world demand for commodities, and particularly on the pulp & paper sector, and the steps taken by Aracruz to protect its liquidity and preserve its operational excellence.
Although the economic scenario has become more challenging, Aracruz held true to its commitment of refining its business model, making it increasingly sustainable. The company shows the progress made in the different aspects of its social and environmental responsibility.
Key stakeholders identified their priorities, with six issues singled out as being the most important - FSC certification, corporate governance, the plantations’ effect on biodiversity and impact on local communities, relations with Indian communities and wood supplied by third parties. These are all highlighted in the report.
Available online only, this 2008 report has been expanded beyond the financial and socio-environmental results. Texts and documents not included in the report are available via links, deepening coverage of matters of specific interest.
External opinions and stakeholder interviews about the company and the content of the report are outlined, including two from sustainability specialists, and five from members of neighboring communities.
For the 6th year in succession, the report includes independent verification on its consistency and accuracy of the content. For the second year Bureau Veritas Certification used the principles of comparability, reliability, timing, materiality and inclusion of stakeholders principles, which are embraced by international rules and standards.
