Report Highlights

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has published its first ever Sustainable Development Report. Titled The STM in 2008, the report scopes STM’s sustainability performance for the last three years: 2006 (the reference or baseline year), 2007 and 2008.

The report describes how the STM has integrated sustainability into its business plan, and the key factors supporting its approach. The backbone of the report is the 2007-2011 Sustainable Development Action Plan, featuring three themes of intervention.

The first theme, sustainable mobility, describes STM’s contribution to society. For example, the 5.3% increase in ridership, from 363.3 million trips in 2006 to 382.5 million in 2008, amounts to  avoiding 41,500 tons of GHG, the equivalent of more than 7,300 cars. Or the 526 millions $CDN disbursed for goods and services in 2008 supported more than 2900 jobs.  This theme also encompasses universal access measures and the integration of urban transit into urban development.
Under the second theme, sustainable management, the reader will find a snapshot of STM’s environmental performance, as well as information about energy use and efficiency and human resources management.  For example, STM’s energy-saving actions resulted in a slight decrease of GHG emissions per passenger-kilometre - from 52 g in 2006 to 49 g in 2008 - despite an increase of 14.6% in kilometres traveled.

The third theme addresses the promotion of sustainable development, through personnel sensitization, branding, relationships with stakeholders and partnerships.

The STM prepared the report with the objective of providing a clear understanding of the link between urban/public transit and the sustainable development of the communities in which public transport authorities operate.
