Report Highlights

In its 125th year, Marks & Spencer has published its latest sustainability report - 2009 How We Do Business - available here
The report updates progress against its 100 Plan A commitments which were launched in January 2007. As the company nears the halfway point of the five year commitments, 39 have been achieved with 24 resulting in new more demanding targets.
During the year, Plan A became cost positive whilst also succeeding in reducing carbon emissions by 18%, food packaging by 12%, food carrier bag usage by 83% and improving the efficiency of delivery fleets by 20%. M&S also worked with suppliers to open four eco and three ethical model factories.
For the first time, the report explains how the company prioritises social, environmental and ethical issues and includes an independent commentary by Jonathon Porritt who has spent eight days over the last year reviewing the company’s progress. Independent assurance is provided by Ernst & Young on the 33 most important issues.
The Report is primarily an update of the company’s Plan A commitments but also includes GRI G3 cross- references.
