Despite the global economic uncertainty, Nexen continued to make progress on its economic, environmental and social performance in 2008. Sustainability highlights included the launch of a company-wide water strategy, achieving safety milestones in parts of Nexen’s operations and being included on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for the eighth consecutive year. The company also celebrated the commissioning of the Long Lake oil sands facility in 2008. This year’s report outlines some of the concrete steps Nexen is taking to develop its oil sands resources responsibly.

For the sixth year, Nexen enlisted an external stakeholder advisory group to provide guidance and feedback on the report's content. PriceWaterhouseCoopers also reviewed selected quantitative information within the report.

Nexen is uniquely positioned for growth in the North Sea, Western Canada (including the Athabasca oil sands of Alberta and unconventional gas resource plays such as shale gas and coalbed methane), deep-water Gulf of Mexico, offshore West Africa and the Middle East. The company adds value for shareholders through successful full-cycle oil and gas exploration and development and leadership in ethics, integrity, governance and environmental protection.
