British American Tobacco plc (LON:BATS) publishes Sustainability Report 2008

Published 04-30-09

Issued by British American Tobacco

Summary

The Report builds on their vision for sustainable business - addressing key business-related social, environmental & economic impacts

Report Highlights

British American Tobacco p.l.c. has published its second Sustainability Report at www.bat.com/sustainability. Based on the positive feedback they received for their first Sustainability Report, they continue to address their most challenging issues, respond to stakeholder concerns, and provide meaningful targets and performance measures to help stakeholders judge the company’s performance year on year.

This second Report builds on their vision for sustainable business - addressing key business-related social, environmental and economic impacts in a way that aims to build value for all their stakeholders, including their shareholders.

The 2008 Report provides an outline of their vision for sustainability, progress made on last year’s goals and details of the stakeholder dialogue undertaken throughout the year. It continues to focus on the five key goals that comprise their sustainability agenda:

Harm reduction: Strive to bring commercially viable, consumer acceptable reduced-risk products to market.
Marketplace: Take a lead in upholding high standards of corporate conduct in the marketplace.
Supply chain: Work for positive social, environmental and economic impact in the supply chain.
Environment: Actively address the impacts of their business on the natural environment.
People and culture: Work to ensure they have the right people in the right environment to deliver their vision.

This is the second year Ernst & Young LLP have provided independent external assurance over the Report, guided by AA1000 Assurance Standard (2008) and ISAE 3000.

British American Tobacco’s adoption of the updated AA1000AS resulted in an increased scope for the assurance, particularly in the assurance of data gathered from their companies and the assurance of their stakeholder engagement activity.

Full reporting against the GRI G3 indicators can be found online at www.bat.com/GRI. To order hard copies of the sustainability report or provide feedback, please contact sustainability@bat.com.
