Report Highlights

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) Sustainability Review 2008 is now available online: www.iadb.org/sustainability/review in both English and Spanish.

The 2008 Sustainability Review links the IDB's vision with its environmental and social performance. In particular, the IDB’s 2008 sustainability efforts included a response to the food and financial crises; record financial support for environmental improvements; progress in priority initiatives targeting sustainable energy, climate change and water and sanitation, and a corroboration of safeguards in the IDB’s new business model. The review also provides information and data on in-house sustainability efforts.

To help prioritize and to report on progress adequately, the Bank has defined a framework, based on six objectives that includes established commitments and new goals. The report tracks the Bank’s progress towards these goals.

The report is written in line with the G3 Guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative, self-declaring B level.

The Inter-American Development Bank is the main provider of multilateral development financing for Latin America and the Caribbean. The IDB is owned by 48 member countries: 26 borrowing members in Latin America and the Caribbean and 22 nonborrowing members. Since the IDB was founded in 1959, it has approved loans and guarantees totaling $169 billion. The total active portfolio of loan projects numbers more than 620. In addition to financing projects in the public sector, the IDB provides financing to private companies in several sectors such as infrastructure, capital markets, and trade finance. IDB financing is conducted directly or through financial institutions.
