PepsiCo UK & Ireland (PIUK), the company behind brands such as Tropicana, Walkers and Quaker, has published its first ever Environmental Sustainability Report, including a series of environmental pledges. To access the report in full, please follow the link from www.pepsico.co.uk/environment.

The Report highlights PIUK's progress on reducing its carbon footprint, minimising the use of water, and reducing the depletion of natural resources. It also reports on the environmental challenges PIUK faces, announces a number of forward commitments and pledges, highlights a number of dilemmas and includes a range of stakeholder feedback.

The report highlights a number of changes PIUK will make, including the following five ambitions:

1) All energy used in PIUK manufacturing and distribution to be from renewable sources within 15 years, removing all oil and gas from operations;
2) Achieve zero landfill waste across the total supply chain within 10 years;
3) Quaker and Walkers packaging to be renewable, recyclable or biodegradable within 10 years;
4) Replace PIUK distribution fleet with the latest low-emissions vehicles, reducing harmful pollutants by 60% within 10 years; and
5) Achieve zero water intake at Walkers Crisps manufacturing sites within 10 years.

PIUK employs over 5,500 people across 13 locations. Its core brands are Walkers, Quaker, Tropicana and Pepsi - but the business also includes a wide range of other products, including PJ's Smoothies, Snack a Jacks and SunBites.

The report covers data and information for the period January-December 2007 and refers to the UK operations of PepsiCo International. Deloitte conducted limited independent assurance on the data on energy use, water and waste, while Forum for the Future acted as partners, helping to scope the report and co-ordinate the stakeholder consultation.
