Catalyst Paper Corporation has released Taking the Initiative, its 2007 Sustainability Report.  This is the fifth stand-alone annual sustainability report for the North American paper producer and UN Global Compact member.

The report details the social, economic and environmental implications of various initiatives, and provides an array of performance data covering a five-year period.  It describes actions to strengthen Catalyst’s economic performance, within the context of an extremely challenging business environment, while maintaining the company’s commitment to sector-leading environmental and social outcomes.

Among the 2007 highlights detailed in the report:

Launch of Catalyst Cooled - a manufactured carbon-neutral paper on which Rolling Stone magazine now prints.
Achievement of a 69% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over a 1990 baseline (in both intensity and absolute terms), based in part on ongoing energy conservation and use of self-generated bioenergy.
Continued partnerships with non-governmental organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund, and engagement in collaborative forums, in support of ongoing environmental performance improvement.
Ongoing efforts to identify and act on mutually advantageous partnerships with operating communities and aboriginal groups, in support of economic diversification.

The report also details key focal points for improvement during 2008, including safety.

Catalyst is a leading producer of specialty printing papers and newsprint, headquartered in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. The company also produces market kraft pulp, and owns western Canada’s largest paper recycling facility and a 100 per cent recycled newsprint mill in Arizona. With six mills strategically located within western North America, Catalyst has a combined annual capacity of 2.8 million tonnes of production.
