Cutting carbon emissions is perfectly compatible with increasing returns to shareholders, as United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) demonstrates in its Corporate Responsibility Report 2007, available at www.utc.com/responsibility.

UTC reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 5 percent in 2007, as measured by the protocol of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Resources Institute. The result exceeded UTC’s annual emissions reduction goal by 66 percent.

During the same year, UTC’s total shareholder return reached 24 percent. Cumulative shareholder return during the last decade was 388 percent. UTC expects to continue reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 3 percent annually through 2010, the Corporate Responsibility report adds.

UTC was one of 20 Fortune 100 companies to publish a Corporate Responsibility Report when it first did so in 2005. This year’s report describes the company's performance in six key areas: Governance, Environment, Products, Customers and Suppliers, People, and Communities.  UTC annually measures corporate responsibility performance using key performance indicators to help stakeholders understand the company’s improvement and compare UTC to peer companies and industry benchmarks.
