Truist Chief Teammate Officer and Head of Enterprise Diversity Kimberly Moore-Wright shares about her zig-zag path up the corporate ladder in honor of Women’s History Month.

“You’re afraid.”

That was a tough message to hear. But with those three little words, the best advisor I’ve ever had – my mom – cut to the crux of the problem, as I waivered about whether to accept a new opportunity in my banking career.

The truth is – making a career move can be scary. It takes careful consideration and often a bit of courage, especially if you are stretching yourself in a new direction or to a higher level of responsibility. That said, I have built a career doing just that. In fact, my path is more of a “zig-zag” than the traditional climb up the corporate ladder.

What I’ve Learned by Taking Leaps

My journey has included several career-defining pivots and has taught me the value of mentorships and the willingness to move forward. Too often, I believe women in the workforce tend to overthink new opportunities in their career. I think we can sometimes be too careful and limit our own development.

The good news is I ended up taking the job that my mom rightly challenged and encouraged me about. I left my beloved role in learning and development to embark on a new opportunity in marketing, a brand new discipline for me.

It was one of the best moves I’ve ever made. In fact, that bold step is one of the reasons that I’m in the executive leadership position I have today.
