OVERLAND PARK, Kan., August 17, 2021 /CSRwire/ - Jennifer “Jenn” Shafer, associate vice president and director of dispute resolution for Black & Veatch, has been named to the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City’s (CCGKC) latest “Kansas City Tomorrow” leadership class.

Shafer joins 28 other area business, nonprofit and public sector executives in the program’s 43rd class, which begins its 10-month run on Aug. 27. The curriculum of the monthly, daylong sessions focuses on many of the region’s most-pressing issues – education, economic development, diversity and inclusion, and the “KC Rising” initiative, to name a few – and its opportunities. The program seeks to prepare its participants for regional civic leadership roles and to foster new, deep relationships with class members.

Members of the incoming class were nominated earlier this year and selected through a competitive process that included in-person interviews. Shafer, who joined Black & Veatch in November 2011 as a senior claims and litigation attorney, was named the global infrastructure solutions leader’s director of dispute resolution in March 2016 and associate vice president in February 2019.

“As someone dedicated to taking on and resolving complex matters, I’m honored to be chosen for this special opportunity to play an exciting role in addressing this region’s challenges and opportunities,” Shafer said. “For more than a century, Black & Veatch has been a staple of the Kansas City area, dedicated to adding value to the communities we serve here and around the world. This leadership class will help me extend that mission on a more personal level in this place I proudly call home.”

Mark Hill, the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City’s president, said the organization hopes “many of these KCT participants will go on to take a leadership role on an important community issue,” perhaps by serving in appointed or elected office, joining a nonprofit board or community task force, “or stepping up in some other way in our region.”

Once the program is completed, participants are eligible to join the KCT Alumni Association, an independent, non-profit organization that allows the program’s more than 990 graduates to stay connected.
