Winners of the 2016 Emerald Sustainability Awards Announced

Leading the way with outstanding environmental achievements, the winners of the 2016 Emerald Brand Awards for Sustainability include The Valley Hospital, HiTouch Business Services, InterContinental New York Barclay, Barclays Center, UncommonGoods, and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP.

The Valley Hospital was awarded the Emerald Sustainability Award for Healthcare for their thoughtful sustainable dining options, innovative optimizing chiller plants, and efficient use of LED lights and motion detector sensors.

HiTouch was presented the Emerald Sustainability Award for Distribution for their LEED Certified products and services and for encouraging other businesses to go green and engage in environmentally friendly practices, including eco-friendly options for moving and waste management.

Barclays Center was presented the Emerald Sustainability Award for Sports and Entertainment. Barclays’ received the LEED® Silver Certification for New Construction, making it the first professional sports and entertainment venue in the New York metro area to achieve this status for its sustainable design and construction methods. In addition, the popular New York arena has participated in events to promote protecting the planet, including World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour.

InterContinental New York Barclay recently received the Emerald Sustainability Award for Hospitality for their wide range of sustainable practices. These initiatives include energy efficient lighting throughout the hotel, low-flow showerheads and toilets, energy efficient HVAC systems, and triple pane energy efficient windows. In addition, 100% of the hotel's organic food waste is eliminated via two food digesters, which is part of their extensive waste management and recycling program. 

 Uncommon Goods was awarded the Emerald Sustainability Award for Packaging. The e-commerce website offers online consumers environmentally friendly merchandise, including handmade recycled and organic products, and FSC Certified catalogs to promote an eco-friendly and healthy lifestyle for their clients. Uncommon Goods utilizes Emerald’s sustainable void-fill solution when shipping out many of their goods.

The international law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP won the Emerald Sustainability Award for their comprehensive ‘Green Initiative’ policy focused on energy reduction and conservation, hazardous electronic waste, educational and volunteer opportunities, and their formation of “green committees.”

The Valley Hospital, HiTouch, InterContinental New York Barclay, Barclays Center, UncommonGoods, and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP had substantial environmental savings in 2016. A total of 3,280 trees, 506,595 pounds of landfill waste, 91,046 pounds of plastic, and 966,618 gallons of water were saved by converting to Emerald’s sustainability program.
