Global Filipino Schools Program Employs ICT to Uplift Quality of Philippine Education

Students in a Philippine public elementary school use gadgets and technology provided under GFS to make learning more exciting and fun.

In today’s digital world, quality education goes hand-in-hand with Information and Communications Technology.  By harnessing the power of ICT, meaningful 21st century learning can take place within and beyond the classroom which in turn, will allow students to learn, understand, and address issues that affect the nation and the world.

Research has shown that ICT leads to improved student learning and better teaching methods since developments in technology, particularly mobile internet adoption and the availability of affordable data-capable phones and tablets, make it easier for both students and teachers to access a vast library of information previously out of their reach anytime and anywhere they want it.

However, many Philippine public schools are still missing out on the benefits of ICT, prompting Globe Telecom, a leading telecommunications company in the country, to help address the concern through the Global Filipino Schools (GFS) program.  GFS intends to transform at least one school in each of the 219 school divisions under the Philippine Department of Education into centers of ICT excellence within the next four years.  By the end of 2016, the program was already present in 80 school divisions representing 80 schools with combined student population of about 120,000.

The GFS program not only provides selected public schools with internet connectivity but also ensures that they have infrastructure support and ICT equipment such as the Globe Digital Learning Lab – a mobile cart of ICT gadgets such as netbooks, tablets, and projectors powered with superior internet connectivity.  The Lab can be used to teach different subject matters whether inside or outside the classroom to encourage creativity, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.

The program has a teacher training component to empower the teachers with skills to seamlessly use ICT tools in their subject expertise.  In turn, the schools under the GFS Program serve as a teacher training hub for the Department of Education and are responsible for carrying out teacher training to neighboring schools.

“Globe Telecom believes in the power of the Filipino youth to create a more wonderful world. By empowering public schools with ICT-trained teachers, new gadgets, and reliable internet connection, we are able to uplift the state of Philippine education one classroom at a time.  Through GFS, we can help the Department of Education increase understanding and effective usage of ICT in public schools and eventually, provide students the skills and knowledge they need to succeed not only in the classroom but also outside of school,” said Yoly Crisanto, Senior Vice President for Globe Corporate Communications.

A GFS impact assessment released by Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS) Global Market Research Company early 2016 showed that digital skills among teachers and students, particularly on the usage of mobile technology and computer software, showed marked improvement.  Teachers and students also became more well-rounded and engaged in the lessons due to increased engagements driven by various pillars under the 21st Century Learning Framework and the notable increase in the presence of ICT equipment being used in daily academic proceedings.

GFS was recently recognized by Department of Education as an official partner for the government-led Adopt-A-School Program which aims to provide quality and relevant education to the Filipino youth through private sector participation.
