Tetra Pak has a long tradition in providing practical support when governments are introducing and implementing school feeding programmes. Every year, the number of children benefitting from school feeding served in Tetra Pak packages in their schools is being counted. In 2015, more than 70 million children were reached by a Tetra Pak package in their schools which is an increase of 10.9% compared to 2014.

“We are very proud of the rich tradition that Tetra Pak has in supporting school feeding programmes worldwide”, says Tetra Laval Food for Development Director Rafael Fabrega. “We have the technology to make food safe and available everywhere, and practical know-how to implement school feeding programmes. Thanks to public private partnerships, together with our customers, local Governments, NGOs, and UN organisations more than 70 million children benefitted from school feeding in Tetra Pak packages last year.”

According to the United Nations World Food Programme, 368 million children in 169 countries receive food in schools. Since 2000, 21 new countries have started school feeding programmes and 36 countries have scaled up their existing programmes. The World Food Programme estimates at least US$3 is gained from every US$1 invested in economic returns, including educational and local agricultural benefits.

In 2015, new programmes using Tetra Pak packages were implemented in Peru and Philippines among others. The programme in Peru, Qali Warma, started with 175 000 children being provided locally produced fortified milk with cereal and DHA in Tetra Brik®Aseptic 200ml. Slim, processed and packed by Tetra Pak’s local customer. Working in collaboration with Tetra Pak Peru, World Food Programme, and the Latin American School Feeding Network, Tetra Laval Food for Development has provided technical assistance to the Qali Warma School Milk Programme by sharing best practices and experiences used in school feeding worldwide. In addition, Tetra Pak Peru has developed an environmental education and recycling initiative in some of the schools as part of Tetra Pak’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.

Since 1962 Tetra Pak has worked with governments around the world to initiate, promote and support school milk and school feeding programs linked to local agricultural development. The first school feeding programme started in Mexico in 1962, and it is still providing children with milk and other nutritious drinks in schools.

The Tetra Laval Group consists of three industry groups, Tetra Pak, Sidel and DeLaval , all focused on technologies for the efficient production, packaging and distribution of food.
