Over the past 50 years, the global demand for water has doubled. This demand is expected to continue to go up by an additional 40 percent by 2030. As one of the world’s largest brewers, HEINEKEN recognises and embraces its responsibility to promote responsible water use and encourage others to do the same as part of its sustainability strategy ‘Brewing a Better World’ (BaBW).
HEINEKEN has set water commitments to reach by 2020:
Reduce our specific water consumption in the breweries by 30% to 3.5 hl/hl
Reduce our specific water consumption in those 23 breweries that operate in water-scarce areas to 3.3 hl/hl
Aim for significant water balancing through stewardship programmes in those areas
Aimed at advancing Water Stewardship, HEINEKEN recently announced a partnership with UNIDO to help support water sustainability in developing markets such as Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria and Tunisia.
