TWC exceeds original $100 million commitment to inspire the next generation of problem solvers and pledges to continue connecting kids to STEM

The White House today announced that Time Warner Cable (TWC), through its Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) initiative, has reached its goal of connecting one million young people to hands-on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning opportunities and resources. Pledges to connect a million minds to STEM were collected through the CAMM website, where parents, educators and mentors also recorded stories of how they introduced students to STEM activities. The milestone comes less than five years after President Obama and TWC announced this commitment in response to the White House’s “Educate to Innovate” campaign, which is designed to move American students from the middle to the top of the pack in science and math achievement over the next decade.
The announcement was made at today’s White House Science Fair, which was attended by TWC Chairman and CEO Rob Marcus.
Marcus said, “All of us at Time Warner Cable are extremely proud of the work we’ve done to inspire our nation’s future problem solvers and cable’s next generation of innovators. For the past five years, our Connect a Million Minds initiative has anchored our company in a relevant and important cause that has helped us live up to the commitment we have to our communities and the future we all share.”
TWC was honored to bring Jayda Collazo, 12, of the Bronx, N.Y., and Eddie Cuba, 11, of Paterson, N.J., to the White House event as representatives of the one million young people who have become interested in STEM because of CAMM. Collazo and Cuba are members of The Children Aid’s Society—Dunlevy Milbank Boys & Girls Club and Boys & Girls Club of Paterson & Passaic, respectively. Both Clubs are part of Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA)’s partnership with TWC to help address America’s declining proficiency in STEM, which was announced earlier this year.

With the support of partners like Time Warner Cable, we hope to inspire underrepresented youth in STEM by teaching them how to make technology—rather than just consume it—and how to think critically and creatively.”
Although the future job market relies heavily on STEM capabilities, young Americans have historically shown alarmingly low levels of interest in these subjects. In 2009, in response to the President’s call to action, TWC launched Connect a Million Minds to have parents, mentors and others commit to connecting over one million students to highly-engaging after-school STEM activities. Connect A Million Minds was created to help bridge the “inspiration gap” - the gap between how American students currently think about STEM and how they will need to approach STEM in order to become the problem solvers of tomorrow who fill the STEM workforce pipeline.
Through national and local non-profit partnerships, employee volunteers, original public service announcements and innovative campaigns like STEM in Sports and Wouldn’t It Be Cool If…, TWC has organized direct and in-kind investments of more than $100 million cash and in-kind to-date to inspire student interest in STEM subjects. Together with partners and nonprofit organizations around the country, like FIRST Robotics and the Coalition for Science After School, CAMM connects students to high-quality STEM learning experiences.
Building on the milestone announced today, TWC will continue connecting students through new and expanded partnerships that bring high-quality STEM learning to existing afterschool programs – particularly those that focus on reaching young girls, African Americans, Hispanics and other underrepresented populations. TWC has approximately 80 CAMM events planned for the coming months and will continue to leverage its media assets, which include "It Ain't Rocket Science"- an original television series that introduces families to STEM events and careers.
