Volcom announces the release of the final sustainability report for the 2014 Volcom Pipe Pro and for the second year Sustainable Surf has certified it as a Deep Blue Surfing Event.

A Deep Blue Surfing Event (DBSE) is a more “ocean friendly” surf contest that reduces environmental impacts and creates social benefits for the local community. It addresses issues directly related to the local contest area including waste reduction, the use of renewable energy and the building of stronger communities. It also offsets the carbon footprint, and commits to transparent public reporting of sustainability performance.

Each year, Volcom has set out to improve upon the initiatives that started simply with issuing reusable water bottles to contestants and staff and using previous year’s vinyl banners to make the tote bags for said participants. Thus, the event has evolved to a carbon neutral event, running on locally produced bio-fuel, whose food, plates and utensils are chipped and layered into a Bokashi compost at the local farm.

Last year’s film Volcom Pipe Pro 2013: Sustainable by Design, by Nathan Peracciny, highlighted the journey of creating a more sustainable event, and interviewed many of the key players the company partnered with to make it a success.

To align with the release of the report, Volcom is also promoting the upcoming World Premiere of Nathan Peracciny’s follow up to the 2013 sustainability-in-surf documentary. The short will be screened in conjunction with World Ocean’s Day Hawaii, June 8th at the Doris Duke Theater in Honolulu, HI with a discussion panel immediately following, moderated by Volcom’s Sr. Director of Sustainability, Derek Sabori.

The new film, Sustainable by Design, will tell the behind the scenes story of the people that make the community that contributes to the event and will highlight the sustainability initiatives, the thoughts of Volcom team riders and industry insiders, as well as feature the far reaching effects that an event like this can have.

The well-crafted, concise and easy to read Deep Blue Surfing Event report can be found in it’s full format at Sustainable Surf’s website or directly at http://sustainablesurf.org/volcom-pipe-pro-2014.

For a full recap of the event, watch the Red Bull Signature Series premiere of the Volcom Pipe Pro 2014 on NBC, June 7th, 2014. Check your local listings.
