First-Ever 'Battle of the Boros' Social Entrepreneur Pitch Competition Will Take Place in January

Calling all New York City Social Entrepreneurs! MakeImpactNYC, a unique social good conference bringing together the NYC social impact economy, is now accepting applications for the first-ever Social Impact ‘Battle of the Boros,’ a pitch competition where entrepreneurs from every corner of NYC vie for the “Best of the Boros” Social Good crown.

The event, which will take place on Jan. 16,2014 at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus, plays on the good-natured (and spirited) sibling rivalry between NYC’s five boroughs and celebrates the entrepreneurs making a difference in their neighborhoods and beyond. Two lucky winners— the ‘Best of the Boros’ winner chosen by a panel of esteemed business leaders as judges, as well as the American-Idol-like “People’s Choice” selected by audience members on their smart phones— will win cash prizes as well as valuable marketing, business, and consulting services.  This high-energy event will feature borough-themed entertainment throughout the evening.

To be eligible for the competition, enterprises and entrepreneurs must be based in one of the five boroughs and have a ‘social purpose,’ addressing a social or environmental issue in NYC. The competition is open to for-profit, non-profit and hybrid social enterprises (including LLC, L3C, C-Corp, S-Corp, B-Corp, 501c3 entities) from startups to two years old.

Applications must be submitted no later than Dec. 31, 2014, 5pm EST.

Judging Process:

Applicants will be screened by a ‘Battle of the Boros’ committee of business leaders, entrepreneurs, and Fordham’s business school faculty. Finalists will be selected from each borough to compete at the Jan. 16th pitch competition, immediately following the MakeImpactNYC conference.  A panel of invited business leaders and Social Enterprise experts will judge the live event on Jan. 16th. Contestants will be judged upon social innovation, sustainability, business model, potential for social impact in NYC, and quality of presentation.
