Mayor Julian Castro, outgoing Washington Post chairman and CEO Donald Graham, singer Gloria Estefan and other luminaries celebrated America’s Sunday Supper at the San Antonio Museum of Art on Thursday, Aug. 29, to discuss how the education and service sectors, parents and communities-at-large can collaborate to help youth achieve their dreams. The San Antonio Sunday Supper focused particularly on the theme of empowering America’s Latino youth through education and economic opportunity. Hosted by Points of Light, Target and Henry R. Munoz III, the event was part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the March on Washington.

Mayor Castro, Mr. Munoz and other speakers shared memories of Dr. King and what MLK Day and the March’s anniversary this month mean to them. Tracy Hoover, president of Points of Light, and Laysha Ward, president, community relations, Target, shared the vision for America’s Sunday Suppers – a national movement that promotes bringing people together in service, dialogue and civic engagement while sharing a meal.

Mr. Munoz led a discussion panel that included Mayor Castro, Donald Graham, Gaby Pacheco, director, American Bridge Project and Cesar Conde, president, Univision Networks, followed by table conversations among the guests about how to use Dr. King’s words and actions of 50 years ago to empower San Antonio and America’s youth today.

"San Antonio has welcomed us with open arms, as we continue our mission that began with the Martin Luther King Day of Service this past January to gather diverse leaders around the supper table to solve community problems,” said Points of Light’s Tracy Hoover. “There were great dialogues begun last night with those here who care a great deal about Latino youth empowerment and education.”

“Target is proud to support Points of Light in bringing together more than 100,000 Americans to realize Dr. King’s vision where Americans unite in service,” said Target’s Laysha Ward. She added that America’s Sunday Suppers align with Target’s commitment to service and education. "Education is a pathway out of poverty and into economic opportunity, which is why Target has committed $1 billion to education by the end of 2015.”

This San Antonio event was the seventh Sunday Supper this year.
