From fighting the Keystone Pipeline to pushing for action on climate change, perhaps no other current or former investment world figure has been more visible in 2013 than Tom Steyer, a business leader and investor who founded and served as the senior managing partner of Farallon Capital Management. Steyer will be a keynote speaker at the 24th annual SRI Conference, gathering October 28-30 at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs.

Since leaving the investment world, Steyer has established himself as a powerful force to be reckoned with on environmental issues. Recently profiled by Politico as one of the top “50 Politicos to Watch” in 2013, Steyer’s high-profile financial background and recent interest in elevating sustainable energy and climate change issues in election politics has drawn much media attention, and made him a highly sought speaker with both investors and environmentalists.

SRI Conference planners at First Affirmative Financial Network are delighted that Steyer has agreed to keynote the largest annual gathering of sustainable, responsible, impact (SRI) investors at the 24th annual SRI Conference. He is scheduled to speak on October 30, 2013.

First Affirmative President Steve Schueth, producer of The SRI Conference, said: “Everyone involved in planning the SRI Conference was thrilled to hear about Mr. Steyer’s commitment to keynote the SRI Conference in October. In addition to his remarkable philanthropic commitments, Mr. Steyer’s devotion to environmental causes and sustainability issues make him the perfect choice to speak to investors and investment professionals from across the country who work to direct the flow of investment capital in more healthy, transformative ways—toward a truly sustainable future.”

Before retiring from the private sector, Steyer founded and was the Senior Managing Member of Farallon Capital Management. He was also a Managing Director and member of the Investment Committee at Hellman & Friedman. He has worked to promote economic development and environmental protection in the state of California. In 2012, he served as chairman for Yes on Proposition 39, which closed a tax loophole for out-of-state corporations and created jobs in California. In 2010, he teamed with former Secretary of State George Shultz to defeat California’s Proposition 23, an effort by out-of-state oil companies to dismantle California’s groundbreaking clean energy law, AB 32.

Steyer founded Advanced Energy Economy to advance policy in the clean energy sector, Next Generation, which addresses climate and family policy, and NextGen Climate Action, which acts politically on climate issues.

Steyer and his wife, Kat Taylor, joined Warren Buffett, Bill and Melinda Gates and other high-wealth Americans in the “Giving Pledge,” a promise to donate the majority of their wealth to charitable and nonprofit activities during their lifetimes. He and Ms. Taylor created and funded the Oakland-based One PacificCoast Bank and Foundation, which provides loans and banking services to underserved small businesses, communities and individuals in California and along the west coast.
