Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation today announced that it has donated $1.125 billion in medicines over its eleven-year history through its Patient Assistance and Product Donation Programs.  The Patient Assistance Program has given uninsured and underinsured U.S. patients over $651 million in medicines, and the Product Donation Program has provided over $474 million in medicines to underserved patients in the U.S. and around the world.  Through these and other programs, the Foundation is fulfilling its mission to provide more health to patients, families and communities.

“Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation aims to make more health for those in need,” said Lilly Ackley, President, Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation.  “What is most important about crossing this giving milestone is the vast number of patients our programs have helped.”

Patient Assistance Program

The Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation Patient Assistance Program provides the company’s branded prescription medicines free of charge to uninsured and underinsured patients in the U.S. who meet eligibility criteria. The program has benefitted nearly 500,000 patients over the Foundation’s history, giving them access to the company’s innovative products to treat serious medical conditions.

Product Donations Program

The Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation gives its medicines to its three qualified nonprofit organizations including AmeriCares, Direct Relief International and MAP International who, in turn, distribute them to reach patients in need in the U.S. and around the world.  These nonprofits collaborate with trusted partners to provide ongoing medical service programs and respond to disasters with comprehensive, coordinated relief.

Other Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation Programs

In addition to the programs outlined above, the Foundation creates more health in other ways. Its Financial Contributions program has provided over $21 million of monetary support to programs that strengthen communities.  Through its Employee Volunteer Program, Boehringer Ingelheim employees across the U.S. give more than 18,000 hours of service in 2011 at company-sponsored events, charitable drives and personal volunteer efforts.  Additionally, the Foundation’s three-year global “Making More Health” initiative in collaboration with Ashoka supports the most promising solutions to challenging health problems.
