Hub Ventures and Lakeland Ventures Development Renew Collaboration to Accelerate Human Safety Innovation

Hub Ventures (www.hub-ventures.com), a startup accelerator for entrepreneurs building a better world, and Lakeland Ventures Development (LVD) (www.lakelandventuresdevelopment.com), a privately-held retained business development and investment firm, today announced the second year of their innovative collaboration to identify and accelerate the growth of startup companies developing breakthrough product and service technologies that save lives and improve human safety, health and wellbeing.
“Hub Ventures is fast becoming the accelerator of choice for savvy entrepreneurs building scalable, for-profit companies addressing social and environmental issues,” said Scott Flood, an LVD founding partner, “and their intensive 12-week development program reflects deep commitment to impact entrepreneurs along with a clear understanding of what they need to do to build a successful business and raise investment capital.”
In this collaboration, Hub Ventures will identify a subset of three human safety focused startups to participate in its upcoming Spring 2013 cohort. Upon selection, companies will have access to extensive business development resources, expert mentor counsel, and a home-base in the HUB SoMa collaborative working space. Each startup will receive seed funding of up to $20,000 from LVD and will be eligible to receive follow-on funding up to $75,000 upon completion of the Hub Ventures program.
“Corporations are increasingly looking outside of their own organizations for innovation and new sources of revenue”, said Rick Moss, Hub Ventures Founding Director. “LVD is at the forefront of this Open Innovation movement, working with their corporate partners to source innovations from the startup community and beyond. Together Hub Ventures and LVD are creating an Open Innovation platform, a new business identification and development model we intend to replicate and expand to different sectors of interest.”
Hub Ventures provides funding and support to technology-powered and other scalable startups focused on a variety of impact themes including economic opportunity, health & safety, environmental sustainability, collaborative consumption, and civic engagement. This year’s Spring 2012 cohort featured 7 high-caliber startups including three in human safety: StreetOwl, which saves the lives of teen drivers by incentivizing them to drive more safely; DIIME, which improves infant and maternal health outcomes in the developing world; and CheckInOn.Me, a proactive, automated personal safety system.
