Time Warner Cable announced that its philanthropic initiative Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) is the winner of the 2012 Beacon Awards® competition’s highest honor, the Golden Beacon Award.  Sponsored by the Association of Cable Communicators (ACC), the national Beacon Awards competition recognizes excellence in communications and public affairs throughout the cable industry.

CAMM is a five-year, $100 million cash and in-kind philanthropic initiative to address America’s declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), which puts children at risk of not competing successfully in a global economy.

“We are very proud to be recognized with such an honor as the ACC Golden Beacon,” said Tessie Topol, Senior Director of Strategic Philanthropy for Time Warner Cable. “This award represents our continuous efforts in elevating the importance of science and technology in the lives of kids and communities, and helping them understand the importance of STEM education to the future of our country.”

From the many entries received in this year’s Beacon Award competition, 41 winners were chosen by cable communications professionals in an extensive two-phase judging process.  Entries represented initiatives implemented over the past year, in areas such as community relations, education and public service announcements.

The winners of the 2012 Beacon Awards were announced during the Beacon Awards Ceremony & Luncheon on Thursday, September 13, 2012, at the Hilton New York.   The Beacon Awards Ceremony concluded ACC's annual conference FORUM 2012: Communicator.2012 The Critical Skills for Today, held September 12-13.

“The Beacon Awards honor the best of cable’s many efforts to improve the lives of its customers.  These award-winning projects truly reflect the cable industry’s strong commitment to the communities it serves,” said Steve Jones, Executive Director, ACC.
