The New Year is bringing a combined $200,000 boost to nearly 50 small Canadian charities from the PricewaterhouseCoopers Canada Foundation Leadership Grants Program. With a focus on providing much needed funding for professional development activities for staff and volunteers, the program is helping to fill a critical gap in operational funding made available to the charitable sector.

“There are limited funds available for the professional development of dedicated employees at Canadian charities and funders have traditionally steered away from providing support for core operational activities,” says James Temple, Leader of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Canada Foundation. “Learning and development plays a critical role in the ongoing success of a charity’s social mission. Funders can address this gap by providing the right balance of resources to empower people to hone their skills and by investing in the long-term sustainability of the charitable community.”

The number of applicants to the Foundation’s Leadership Grants Program jumped by almost 50% in recent years, which underlines an increase in number of requests from charities looking to collaborate with one another around specific issues in their local communities.

“Our Foundation has worked collaboratively with our charitable partners to develop the Leadership Grants Program since day one and we’ve managed to find an effective balance between our firm’s ethos for helping people strengthen professional capabilities and identifying needs with lasting social impacts,” says Temple.  “We’re encouraging more companies to think strategically about the ways they can leverage their combined skills, experiences and resources to help find this shared value.”

Since the program launched in 2006, the Foundation’s Leadership Grants Program has awarded more than $1,000,000 to over 400 recipients and developed new relationships and case examples of how funding educational experiences are the initial steps in the continuum of opportunity.
