On Bank Transfer Day, November 5th, and on Friday, November 4th, students at colleges from around the country will be moving their money from national banks into credit unions and community banks. They’ll also be educating themselves and each other about the problems with the banking system and the value of moving money into smaller banks and community development financial institutions. In the following weeks, they’ll be calling on their universities to do the same.
As an example, at Washington University in St. Louis, students will be gathering at a campus Bank of America branch, closing their accounts, and then heading to a local community development credit union, St. Louis Community Credit Union, to open new accounts, according to senior student Molly Gott.
At University of Pittsburgh students are showing the documentary Inside Job that explains the origins and university connections of the financial crisis and securing pledges from students to move their money, and to petition the university to invest in its community.
Students will be taking a variety of different actions to support this major national event.
