/PRNewswire/ - Today, the AT&T Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AT&T* Inc. (NYSE: T) announced a grant of $66,956.25 to United Way of Monmouth County. For over 60 years, AT&T and the AT&T Foundation have been strong supporters of the United Way both nationally and locally. The AT&T Foundation has given $6.3 million in 2011 to 579 local United Ways across the country.
"AT&T shares United Way's commitment to strengthening communities and improving lives," said J. Michael Schweder, President, AT&T New Jersey. "United Way of Monmouth County's support of programs with proven results heightens the positive impact on our community and its citizens by connecting them with resources and expertise to improve their situation. We are proud to support the important work of Monmouth County and other New Jersey United Way branches."
"Monmouth County is where we live – it is our community. While other charities address specific needs, perhaps national in scope, the United Way of Monmouth County addresses a broader array of challenges facing those in need right here in Monmouth County," said Robert Bonney, Chair of United Way of Monmouth County Board of Directors, Partner at Lomurro, Davison, Eastman & Munoz, P.A.
United Way of Monmouth County will use the grant to continue its work in the community to create long-lasting change. Nationally, the United Way works to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of communities around the world to advance common good. In Monmouth County, the United Way has a record of supporting projects that create opportunities for a better life for all by focusing on the key building blocks of Education, Income and Health. For example, in the last year, the organization has funded 14 programs focusing on Education, Income and Health. In Education, programs are centered on after-school programs and high school achievement. Programs in Income are concentrated on basic needs and emergency services, as well as gaining and sustaining employment. In Health, programs work towards helping children get access to dental care and avoiding high-risk behaviors.
In addition to this grant, each year AT&T employees take part in an employee giving campaign that provides millions of dollars to the United Way. In 2010, AT&T's employees, including our employees who are also members of the Communication Workers of America, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Telecommunications International Union, pledged $32 million through this campaign.
