In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and its Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC) are participating in a national initiative to organize the largest outpouring of community service in American history. Part of the Chamber BCLC’s commitment to this initiative is to gather data for and build the new 9/11 Day Project Map, in which companies of all sizes are invited to participate.

“9/11 is forever etched in our memories, and BCLC is proud to partner with My Good Deed, Hands On Network, and the other partners in this initiative to honor and remember the victims, survivors, and the individuals who rose in service,” said Chamber BCLC Founder and Executive Director Stephen Jordan. “Our goal is to mobilize the nation’s business sector in acts of service and to mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11 by reporting these acts on the 9/11 Day Project Map.”

BCLC is collecting information from businesses and chambers across the country. Examples of business service commitments include:

  • Moments of silence in the workplace
  • Volunteer projects
  • Discounts for emergency responders
  • Memorials and testimonials
  • Disaster and emergency preparedness training

Among the business activities planned in tribute, AXA Equitable is holding workplace screenings in seven locations of the documentary film, PROJECT REBIRTH, a living testament to honor 9/11 and its victims and heroes. The Ritz-Carlton in Pentagon City, Virginia, will host a breakfast on September 9th for the Arlington First Responders, including those who responded to the Pentagon attack on September 11, 2001, while the Chicago-Lombard Residence Inn by Marriott is collecting items for its local food pantry, which has faced a difficult time keeping its shelves stocked.

To aid participation in the 9/11 Day Project Map, the Motorola Mobility Foundation built and donated an Android app that allows mobile users to search for volunteer projects and add their own business activities.

The Chamber BCLC invites America’s thousands of small businesses, chambers of commerce, and corporations to log their service projects on the 9/11 Day Project Map. To assist the business community in developing service projects for this tribute, Chamber BCLC’s website contains a Business Toolkit available for download.
