This full report, which succeeds a partial report provided by the company in 2010, reaffirms American Water as the first U.S. water and wastewater company to report on environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance against Global Reporting Index (GRI) guidelines. "American Water was founded 125 years ago on a responsible and sustainable approach to business," said President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Sterba. "As a trusted steward of our most precious resource "“ water "“ we believe having a corporate management approach oriented toward corporate responsibility is key to our long-term success and the ability to provide high-quality services to our customers and maintain trust with them as well as all our stakeholders."
American Water's first biennial report includes the company’s priorities, policies and approaches to corporate responsibility, and covers performance for the 2010 Fiscal Year, using GRI G3 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines, including GRI's Reporting Principles of materiality, sustainability context, stakeholder inclusiveness and completeness. Additionally, the report uses the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility Liquid Assets report to guide reporting and indicators specific to the water industry. The report is self-declared at GRI Application Level B.
Today's new water reality presents challenges to the entire water and wastewater industry, from climate variability and aging infrastructure to increasing water quality regulation and changes in water demand. Having a strategic approach to corporate responsibility that helps American Water address each issue from a sustainability perspective has never been more important.
