During the last decade, Babylon Group has introduced Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in the garment sector for the first time such as: Clinics and Child-Care Centers at all factories and public health centers with surgery facilities to serve the local communities around the factories; Fair price shops; Scholarship programs; a library and activities such as annual picnic and sports, fashion show, cultural program, an annual magazine named "Babylon Kathokata" and other benevolent initiatives for the employees and their family members. It also has its own Effluent Treatment Plants at its dyeing and washing units. During natural adversities such as flood, drought, cyclones, tidal surge Babylon group provides of relief materials including cash to the victims as well as partners with the government and other donor agencies to help them.

In order to deal with the menstrual hygiene challenges for urban women workers, Babylon Group has established an in-house production of low-cost sanitary napkins, based on a summer project of a student. The innovation in this initiative is that, by using existing infrastructure and a small start-up investment on the equipment, Babylon Group has been able to, without sacrificing quality, bring down the price to Tk 3 per piece, which is less than 40% of the price at which commercial brands are sold.

Further, the employees of Babylon Group run this operation by themselves in a self sustainable manner without any subsidies on the direct costs. "Softy" the low-cost sanitary napkins from Babylon Group has substantially changed the way their women workers deal with Menstrual Hygiene from being "an act of shame" with rags and diseases to "take it in your stride" attitude that the middle class working women are used to in Dhaka.

At the recent launching ceremony of "Softy," Dhaka Civil Surgeon, Dr. Jasim Uddin Khan said: "This is a major milestone in the effort to keep urban women workers, specially in the garment sector healthy and not loose working days every month on account of menstrual issues." Based on the success of the pilot project, Babylon Group as a pioneer of the lowcost Napkins concept in Bangladesh is interested in expanding availability to the needy, through strategic partnerships / relationships with donors, NGOs and other relevant organizations.
