Gender Equality, Behavioral Change, Economy: The Katerva Awards Expands Definition of Sustainability

American 2049, the human rights-themed Facebook game from Breakthrough, was recently nominated for a Katerva Award in the sustainability category of Behavioral Change.

This nomination is an example of the scope of sustainability covered by the Katerva Awards. Recognizing the most influential and powerful sustainability initiatives on the planet, Katerva goes beyond the limits of material developments such as new technologies. Instead, the awards also acknowledge the necessary behavioral, economic, cultural and design factors that work together in building a sustainable civilization.

Toward this comprehensive view, the Katerva Awards recognizes winners in the following 10 categories: Food Security, Gender Equality, Behavioral Change, Economy, Protected Areas, Materials & Resources, Human Development, Energy & Power, Transportation, and Urban Design.

Nominees in each category undergo a rigorous, six-phase evaluation process that includes 12 stages of focused review looking at feasibility, scalability, originality and impact. Globally recognized experts in each individual category determine the final winners, which then move on to the Katerva Award Council for the selection of one grand prize winner.

Winners of the Katerva Awards will be announced at a ceremony December 7, 2011 at Lincoln Center in New York City.
