Today The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) announced that it has received a 2010 CSX Chemical Safety Excellence Award (CSEA), which highlights the company's commitment to chemical safety. The award was presented recently at a ceremony in Charlotte, N.C.

"We are extremely proud to accept this award on behalf of all the employees of Dow, who work every day to ensure the safety and integrity of all that we ship through our communities," said Darrell Zavitz, vice president of Supply Chain at Dow. "Safety and sustainability are top priorities for Dow, and we are dedicated to developing, implementing and sharing best practices that keep our people and communities safe."

Dow uses much of the 21,000 miles of CSX track in the U.S. to safely and efficiently transport materials and products. Rail systems are integral to Dow's supply chain as they are considered one of the most energy efficient modes of transport.

"CSX is pleased to recognize Dow's commitment to safely transporting its goods," said Clarence W. Gooden, executive vice president, sales and marketing and chief commercial officer, CSX. "Safety is a way of life at CSX, and we are proud to partner with customers like Dow to ensure that every ton of freight is shipped as safely and as efficiently as possible."

The CSEA specifically recognizes those companies that shipped 600 or more railcars during 2010 on CSX, with zero non-accident hazardous material releases through the entire year. Winners come from many different industries, including chemicals, fertilizer and agriculture, as well as emerging markets. This marks the fifth consecutive year that Dow has received this recognition.

"At Dow, we have four key pillars of sustainability and Responsible Operations is one of them. It reflects a deep-seeded commitment to manufacture and transport products and raw materials in a way that is safe and secure, and that serves as a model for others wherever we operate," said Lawrence Cresci, global director of Supply Chain Operations. "We work closely with logistics partners like CSX to assess safety and security, and to constantly improve performance across the supply chain."
