The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW), a leader in energy conservation and industrial energy efficiency, has been recognized by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) for its achievements. ACC awarded Dow with two Responsible Care® Awards - one for the Company's $100 million energy efficiency initiative and one for its Texas City Operations facility's two Superior Energy Performance Certifications by the U.S. Department of Energy.

ACC's 2010 Responsible Care® Energy Efficiency Awards recognizes companies' achievements in improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas or other environmental impacts. These awards are part of the ACC's Energy Efficiency Continues Improvement Program (EECIP).

As part of Dow's commitment to continuous improvement of energy intensity, Dow committed $100 million to fund acceleration in energy efficiency projects at its sites around the world. The ACC's Responsible Care® Energy Efficiency Award recognized Dow's Energy Intensity Improvement Fund for stimulating innovations in energy programs. With projects throughout the U.S., Spain, Germany and the Netherlands, projected savings are approximately five trillion British Thermal Units (BTUs) and 260,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.

The ACC also recognized Dow's Texas City Operations as one of the first of four facilities in the U.S. to pilot the Department of Energy's Superior Energy Performance (SEP) program. In the process, the facility achieved certifications for its Isopropanol and Energy Systems units. SEP is a new American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-accredited energy management certification program designed to help industrial facilities drive continual energy efficiency achievements while maintaining competitiveness. The project was developed by the Department of Energy with support from the U.S. Council for Energy-Efficient Manufacturing (U.S. CEEM). The participation of Texas City Operations enabled the program to be piloted at a large integrated industrial site. Texas City Operations is owned and operated by Union Carbide Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company.

Dow's energy efficiency efforts have prevented more than 95 million metric tons of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, from entering the atmosphere and have contributed a cost savings of $9.4 billion since 1994.
