A New Online Network for Sustainable Communities

AmericanTowns is launching GreenTowns.com, a new online network that connects and celebrates green initiatives and their leaders, locally and nationally. Through GreenTowns, residents of thousands of U.S. towns and cities can discover, share and support inspiring sustainability efforts in their community, between towns, and across a range of environmental concerns.

"In these digital times, it should not be hard to find out what is green near you, nor to find someone with related concerns or helpful expertise in your local community or across the country," said Daphne Dixon, Director, GreenTowns. "Connecting through GreenTowns will keep us better informed and allow us to help each other, so we can magnify the impact of what we each do. Together, we can build sustainable communities and a green America."

GreenTowns invites people to submit local green initiatives they admire and to share their expertise and experiences. The site then maps these initiatives by community and by category. Today, GreenTowns features more than 10,000 local groups and resources across a broad range of environmental issues including: building, connections, energy, food, land and conservation, lifestyle, recycling, transportation and water. Subject matter experts and category advisors supplement content and facilitate conversations through blogs and the sharing of questions, information and support across topics and throughout the site.

"Our country has a history of everyday citizens identifying problems and addressing them by working together," said Theodore Buerger, AmericanTowns Chairman and co-founder. "By applying the technological foundation we designed and implemented successfully for AmericanTowns.com to benefit green efforts, we are growing a trusted network for sustainable communities."

To initiate this network, the GreenTowns team reached out first to sustainability leaders and local green enthusiasts in its hometown community of Fairfield, CT, and is now spreading virally to other cities and towns. Elected officials, business owners and green advocates have pledged their support, affirming the need for a network like GreenTowns that encourages cooperation and sharing of information, inspiration and connection. Media partners such as Reader's Digest, BobVila.com, and E - The Environmental Magazine are helping to broaden the reach of the sustainability message.

GreenTowns.com is a free service for green non-profit organizations and local communities. It plans to be self-supported through green-conscious sponsors. Partnering organizations can be found at www.greentowns.com.
