The International Council of Nurses (ICN) is delighted to announce that the 2011 recipient of the ICN Partners in Development Award* is global medical technology company BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company). BD's moral, financial and technical support for nurses leading the ICN Wellness Centres for Health Care Workers® programme since its initiation in 2006 has contributed significantly to ensuring access to health and wellness services for health care workers and their families in sub-Saharan Africa. The award will be bestowed during the Opening Ceremony of the ICN International Conference on Wednesday, 4 May 2011 in Valletta, Malta.

"BD appreciates this recognition from ICN, but the true heroes are the health care workers around the world who risk their own lives every day to care for others," said Gary Cohen, Executive Vice President, BD. "We support the Wellness Centres because they are a proven model for protecting the health care workers who are the foundation of any health system."

"This Award recognises BD's sustained commitment to strengthening and supporting nursing in delivering quality care, and through that, to achieving the Millennium Development goals," stated ICN President Rosemary Bryant. "ICN is proud to count BD as a generous, reliable, respectful collaborator and partner in supporting nursing and ICN in efforts for nurses and other health workers in sub-Saharan Africa."

In providing funding, precious technical support and linkages to other key partners and resources, BD has supported ICN in opening the door to dedicated health services for more than 20,000 health care workers and their family members. This is especially meaningful in a region which experiences the biggest challenges in health care worker attrition and in response to the AIDS and TB pandemics. Thanks in great part to BD's close collaboration and support, the Wellness Centre for Health Care Workers programme is tackling many of the barriers to health and wellness services which health workers face. This allows for a strengthened health care workforce that is better able to meet the population needs and that can address the health human resource crisis in Swaziland, Lesotho, Malawi, Uganda and Zambia.
