New nominees have been announced for the 2011 Katerva Awards in global sustainability.

Recently announced nominees and their projects:

• Researchers at Innowattech and Technion Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel develop a new way to generate clean energy by converting mechanical energy from highways and railroads into electricity.

• Martin Wikelski, Director of Ornithology at the Max Planck Institute, works to establish a global tracking system to follow the migration of small animals.

• Recyclebank develops program to deliver consumer incentives for recycling.

• GSMA mWomen Programme addresses barriers to women's ownership of mobile phones.

• Ushahidi's open source crowdsourcing and mapping software deploys crisis information in real-time.

• The FishNET project develops a low-cost, collaborative monitoring system to stop illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing in international waters.

Nominees of the Katerva Awards undergo a rigorous evaluation process involving 300+ recognized experts, 6 filtering phases, and 12 stages of focused review to discover the best of the best. An awards ceremony for the winners will be held at Lincoln Center in New York City December 7, 2011.
